Why Is It Important How a Doctor Communicates?

Daniela B. Peter and Stefan B. Peter Playing Doctor Stethoscope

A doctor’s profession is a very demanding one. It is therefore difficult to meet each patient with the same care and concern. Yet on the other side the patient expects full and undivided attention. Many doctors weave magic by their pleasant ways and talk. It soothes the heart of the patient and cheers him up. It is therefore important for a doctor to understand how critical it is to know how he or she should communicate.

Smile

A patient usually comes to the doctor in a complicated frame of mind. He has his discomfort to take care of. Then there are anxieties to confront. Above all, the possible causes of the disease, the diagnosis and even prognosis administered by friends and relatives weigh him down. It is in such normal contexts that a patient comes to see a doctor.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

If the doctor can gift him or her a radiant smile, half of his disease will disappear. It gives confidence to the patient. It encourages him to open up and speak all that is in his mind.

It might seem easy but actually it is not. The doctor sees hundreds of patients every day. And the time he can allot to each person is very limited. So if the doctor has to gift a smile, these days he has to make a conscious effort to do so. Even though smile is one of the basics of greeting a person, it might be tough to do so in the busy schedules of a doctor’s life.

Yet if he can gift a special smile, its value is more than the medicines that he can prescribe. So let an abundant dosage of Smile be administered when greeting a patient.

Specific Questions

Often patient’s are unable to describe what they are experiencing. It is here that simple prompts from the doctor assumes vital importance.

For example, a patient is complaining of headache. The doctor asks, “Is it a dull pain or a throbbing one or is it kind of a net spread across?” These questions help the patient to speak out correctly what he is experiencing. It clarifies his confused thinking and elicits the right responses.

Often it is a good idea to ask sure-shot `No” answer questions to get the right answer from the patient. For example, a patient comes to the doctor with leg pain. He points to the portion around the ankle. The doctor asks, “So the pain is also experienced in the toes?” The patient says, “No.” Again the doctor says, “You have the pain in the calf and perhaps the knee?” Again, the answer is “No.” This helps to confirm what the patient has initially said. And it helps in quick and accurate diagnosis.

Often patients tend not to disclose some of their past medical history. Reasons can be many. They might consider it insignificant. Or it might have been some twenty years ago they had a bout of chicken pox. So they might think what bearing it might have on the present complaint since it happened long time ago. Or at times the patient might feel that the doctor might become angry because of resorting to another medical stream like Ayurveda or Homeopathy. Sometimes the patient needs time to trust the new doctor.

In all these cases a few intelligent questions from the doctor can put the patient at ease. It can also enable the patient to reveal needed information which can help the diagnosis. In many cases patients have been found to carry on with medicines that a doctor prescribed long after it should have been stopped. This they do trusting in their own faulty common sense. It is important to bring out such misuse of medicines through intelligent questions.

Giving Instructions

One of the challenges that experts face in all professions is to pass on instructions in a very simple manner. It is here that the basics need to be revisited again. To a doctor, what he explains is something he routinely does. Therefore there is likelihood of missing out some simple but vital instruction.

For example, when a child is having high fever, the doctor advises to give sponge bath. Usually doctors suggest not to do it in the area of the chest. But it is likely (perhaps one in a thousand cases) that the doctor forgets to mention the exception. Other examples can include forgetting to communicate that a particular medicine should be discontinued when another one has been started. Or not mentioning that a particular tablet has to be taken half an hour before food and so on. These are simple omissions but there can be serious consequences with major omissions.

The point that has to be made is this: Patients drink in every word that a doctor tells them. Some of them, especially from poor backgrounds may not have the initiative or skill to ask the doctor for more information even when they feel that they need to get some clarification. Often the patient also gets confused by poor listening on the part of his bystanders when the doctor communicates. These bystanders might communicate to him what the doctor said in a different way.

To avoid such communication mishaps, some tips that can be followed are these. One, explain with patience. Two, go step by step. Three, check for understanding by asking the patient questions along the way. Four, ask for feedback. That is make the patient tell what he has understood. Then confirm with bystanders that they have got it right. Thus the doctor can ensure that the communication aspect has been foolproof.

It is also good to tell the patient and the bystanders what exactly needs to be done in case of an emergency situation if it arises. First of all, tell them what possibilities are there for the likelihood of an emergency. Secondly, tell them what to do as first aid. Thirdly, give them the needed contact information. Finally, whenever possible, reassure them that they can call you anytime (or specify the time) if there is any doubt or need.

Another simple but important thing is to instruct the patient about the buying of medicines. Usually those in the medical stores will try to substitute medicines telling the patient that it is one and the same. This creates great confusion. If the doctor can tell in advance whether medicines can be substituted or not, and if so which ones, then it save the patient from some mind-troubling situations.

These steps can build a good communication bridge between the doctor and patient.

Explaining the Situation

A Flickr Image: Doctor and Patient

A simple term like “Occlusion” for the dentist might sound like a huge dictionary to an uninformed patient. It is here that the doctor needs to translate the medical terminology to a layman’s understanding. As soon as the doctor explains that it means how the teeth fit together, the patient relaxes. For otherwise the sound sense of “Occlusion” is frightening indeed.

Some doctors care enough to explain what is happening. They may display the patients X-ray or CT or MRI scan and show patients their abnormal findings on the images. All this is very comforting to the patient. It puts a lot of confidence in him. At the same time it helps the patient to have greater confidence in the doctor too.

Such knowledge gained from the doctor makes a patient feel that he is in control of the situation. He does not feel helpless. When his relatives and well-wishers come to visit him, he too finds genuine happiness in explaining to them what it is all about. He becomes an expert in no time. Even though the doctor need not educate a patient about all that he is going through some simple explanations can put his mind at ease.

For example, when a doctor shows a diagram of a blood vessel having a block, he is enabling the patient to visualize a “big thing.” The doctor then shows a picture of a small minute wire being inserted through the block and a balloon when inflated opens up the blocked vessel. For preventing further relapse, a stent (a minute pipe) is placed at the site of the block. When the patient sees this he understands the process. His mind feels a lot more at ease having understood what it is all about. This understanding is vital to the healing process. And doctors can provide that with a little bit of imagination and conversation ability.

Of course, the trickiest and perhaps the difficult part comes when explaining grave situations. It is not all easy to break the news. Always it is best to pepper the talk with “hope for the best” statements before the actual situation is described. Naturally the patient will be in all kinds of fear and confusion. And the way a doctor can handle this situation through confidence-building talk can still put some sunshine on what otherwise is a gloomy day.

Jesus and Healing

Jesus healed many during his earthly ministry of 3 1/2 years. He not only healed people with physical illnesses but also the demon possessed. Let us look at how he as the Great Physician communicated during his healing ministry.

Questions First
Often Jesus used to ask those whom he was about to heal: “What do you want me to do for you?” This question acquires importance because not many people really want to be healed. They just talk about getting healed. It is a kind of wishful thinking. But this question of Jesus provokes the patient to really affirm what he needed. And usually Jesus healed when a person gave a reply like, “I want to see (a blind man’s response).”

Forgiveness as a Greater Need
At other times he told a person, “Son, your sins are forgiven,” before he imparted physical healing to him. This kind of communication tells us about the great insight of wisdom and knowledge that Jesus had about a person. Such statements addressed the need of the person to be healed on a deeper level than just the physical healing. In fact, such loving words spoken with authority made a person whole on the inside. And then the physical healing followed.

Divine Possibilities
Finally, Jesus also commanded some persons who were healed like this: “Get up, take your mat and go home.” To a person who was bed-ridden for many years, the possibility of walking is always a distant dream. But such statements were given to make the patient see divine possibilities in life. Even though healing was given, the healed one should act accordingly and move forward in life.

Motivation at times included a warning. To some whom he healed Jesus issued stern warnings not to follow previous sinful lifestyles or else, “Something worse may happen to you.”

“. . . and by his wounds we are healed” — Isaiah 53:5b

Three Magic Words Graduation Speech @ College of Nursing

Respected dignitaries on the dais, beloved colleagues, and graduating students,

Have you wondered how it feels when you’re aboard a ship going on a long voyage for the first time? What is the feel when the ship moves away from shore? You slowly lose sight of your loved ones and all familiar landmarks. Then it is all water everywhere.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

But then what sustains you there? Hope! Hope of fulfilling your dreams, hope of a better tomorrow, and hope of a great journey ahead. My dear graduates and post graduates College of Nursing, you are soon going to be part of this situation I have just described. Life, my dear friends, is forward. There comes moments when we have to step out into the unknown and unmapped territories.

Let me briefly spell out three magic words that can light up your path ahead:

The first magic word I would like to shout out loud to you is the word LIFE.

We live in a world which is increasingly becoming hostile to life. The dignity of life is challenged everywhere. People are being reduced to labels, numbers, and even objects. It is in this context that we Nurses are called to nurture life, value life, cherish life, and bring health and healing to the world.

Have you understood the real impact of this? There was once a man, a common labourer in Europe who said, “I am building here a cathedral with the great Architect Sir Christopher Wren.” See, that person had the insight that though his role was to bring together the bricks and build the wall; he was engaged in a larger task of helping people worship God in a beautiful cathedral. He also had the sense of pride and dignity that he was working along with a great builder of cathedrals.

My dear Nursing graduates, you too are working along side our Creator God. He is in the business of giving life; and you along side with him are also engaged in helping people maintain healthy lives. Be thankful that God has entrusted you with this awesome privilige.

In this context let me remind you those beautiful lines from Michael Jackson,

Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me.

The second magic word I would like to leave with you is PURPOSE.

In that classic movie Chariots of Fire which shows the Olympic Gold winning effort of Eric Liddel, there is a moment where he speaks his heart out to his sister Jennie. He says, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast! And when I run I feel his pleasure.”

Likewise you all are called to be nurses with a purpose—the purpose to care, to give hope, and to put confidence in people. This is a high calling in life. To fulifil that call, you may have to make personal sacrifices.

Lini Puthussery is one among us in Kerala who with great courage and dignity made a great sacrifice to take care of people infected with the Nipah Virus. She could have played it safe. But she chose to pursue the call of duty. Florence Nightingale could have played it safe duringthe Crimean war but she was ready to be used as an instrument of healing in God’s hands. Or take the example of Edith Cavell, a British nurse who was executed by the Germans for saving the lives of many soldiers during World War I. She was quoted as saying, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved.”

So my dear graduating students, you are on a mission with a purpose–the purpose to care, to give hope, and to put confidence in people while nursing them back to good health.

The third magic word I would like to bring to your attention is COMPASSION.

We live in the age of ever-happening technology. What is the impact of this? Many husbands know their mobile phones better than their wives and vice versa. With artificial intelligence making great progress; today life is becoming more and more mechanical and robotic. Lost is the time of family prayer and dinner together. We have also let go of simple conversations at home. Everybody is busy chatting with everyone else in the world but not with members of family.

As Mother Theresa noted, “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.”

So know that most people who come into your care are poor. They may have houses, cars, jobs, and plenty of gold but they are emotionally and spiritually poor. What they need is compassion. One of the characteristics of Jesus during his earthly ministry was that he stopped to listen to the cry of individuals because he was moved with compassion.
Can you be a channel of God’s compassion? If yes, a healing beyond that of physical sicknesses can take place. That is a greater miracle.

Let me conclude. I would like to thank all of you for inviting me to deliver this graduation address. I am deeply thankful for the kind words of introduction too.

My dear graduating students you are now going to be angels of encouragement and hope. You are going to be carrying the light of hope in jars of clay. In yourselves you may feel weak and inadequate for the great task ahead. But let me wish and pray that God Almighty hold you by your right hand and lead you on your journey ahead.

What Better Hope in Life Do You Have Than This?

Remember the three magic words.
Life
Purpose
Compassion.

God bless you all.
Thank you.

A Note of Appreciation to All Teachers with Love and Utmost Respect

Who has not been inspired by a teacher? Somewhere at the back of our minds stands at least one or two who showed us light and pointed out to us the path we need to travel. It is deeply appreciated from all of us. You deserve and have our utmost respect dear teachers.

On this occasion of Teacher’s Day, let me spell out who a teacher really is. A teacher is one who has a heart of love, a passion for knowledge, and a skill for communicating the same.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

A teacher is a balanced mix of discipline and gentleness at the same time. He or she is one who is a role model by setting an example for the students in speech, action, discipline, and character.

He or she, on rare occasions when something goes wrong, is humble enough and honest enough to admit, “Sorry, I made a mistake.”

A teacher is one who has the ability to spot the hidden potential in a child and encourage the child to live true to the dreams in his or her heart.

A huge gallery of famous personalities owe it to their teachers for having first identified their talent and are thankful to them for having nurtured it. The story of Helen Keller and how her teacher Anne Sullivan had influenced her is a timeless inspiration to all; isn’t it?

A teacher believes in a child even when others label him or her negatively and will not neglect a student because others have given up on that student saying that the student is not good in studies.

Many students have found the courage to hope and the dare to dream just because of one teacher who said, “Yes, you can!”

A teacher is one who is not satisfied with the knowledge of the past; but is always updated on what is new in his or her subject. He or she makes an extra effort to bring something new that is interesting, informative, inspiring, and even inter-disciplinary to class each day.

This extra effort is a thing of joy for the teacher and extremely satisfying as the class responds enthusiastically and attentively.

A teacher is one who listens carefully and attentively to what students tell him or her. In other words, when students find in a teacher a caring heart, they trust the teacher with even personal and intimate matters of the heart that they cannot share with even their best friend.

Above all these things, a teacher inspires. One timely word of appreciation from a teacher can ignite a spark and a fire in the lives of students.

Thus a teacher shining a small burning light even in a remote village might be igniting a fire in the life of a brilliant student who will carry that to the ends of the earth one day!

What Better Hope in Life Do You Have Than This?

“I sing the praise of the Unknown Teacher,” wrote Henry Van Dyke, himself a teacher. “Great Generals win campaigns, but it is the unknown soldier who wins the war. Famous educators plan new systems of pedagogy, but it is the unknown teacher who delivers and guides the young. He lives in obscurity and contends with hardship. For him no trumpets blare, no chariots wait, no golden decorations are decreed.

“He keeps the watch along the borders of darkness and makes the attack on the trenches of ignorance and folly. Patient in his daily duty, he strives to conquer the evil powers which are the enemies of youth. He awakens sleeping spirits. He quickens and communicates his own joy in learning and shares with boys and girls the best treasures of his mind. He lights many candles which, in later years, will shine back to cheer him. This is his reward.” Source: https://repository.mainlib.upd.edu.ph/omekas/files/original/9e107c3a86ea8311c4812b044874b9d140684fcb.pdf

A School Leader’s Speech on Missing the Mark

Hi Friends,

Today I thought to challenge you with the Greek word “hamartia.” It means missing the mark.

Imagine someone trying to throw a dart into a bull’s eye. It falls short and misses target. That is an example of missing the mark. Or else think of a basket ball player shooting the ball into the basket. Instead of falling through the net, it hits the board and rebounds. That is yet another example of missing the mark.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

In life, we can miss the mark if we have everthing—fame, success, money, power, wealth, followers and many things more; but fail to have love in our hearts.

In studies, we can miss the mark if we waste opportunties to study by getting distracted by social media or by getting addicted to bad habits.

In family, we can miss the mark if we do not value our loved ones and spend time with them when there are chances to do so.

In friendships, we can miss the mark if we fail to be a friend in need and do not give an empathetic listening to one who is sharing his or her pain with us.

In the perspective of eternity, we can miss the mark if we don’t prepare for it by making wise decsions and honouring God in our hearts on earth.

Yes friends, missing the mark is something each one of us should fear. This fear should make us have sharp focus, avoid distractions and unhealthy habits. This fear should make us strive with all our heart and mind and soul and strength not to miss the mark.

Four Sure Ways You Can Earn Respect from Others

Many demand respect but sadly it cannot be commanded. On the other hand, respect is hard-earned. In this short speech let me highlight four ways you can earn respect from others.

First of all, you can earn respect with your behaviour. Let it be courteous. Treat others with the same kindness you expect them to show to you. Carry yourself with dignity and never be frivolous in good company. Remain humble and do not try to blow your own trumpet even when you have many ahcievements to your credit. Then people will respect you.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Secondly you can earn respect with your expertize. Be extremely good at something. It can be your academics, work, or hobby or something else you are passionate about. When people see your skill and the ease with which you get things done, they’ll naturally respect you.

Thirdly you can earn respect through your communication skills especially through the way you speak. Speech reveals the stuff and character you are made of. A gentle tongue can break a bone1 says the Bible. You might need to be persuasive and you might have to command at times, but when tempered with gentleness it cannot fail to earn respect from others.

Avoid diminishing people in front of others. Do not make fun of them or mock them. But with your conversation build them up in having a better sense of their worth and esteem.

Another important way you can earn respect is by your attitude. Being cool under pressure is something that marks out great captains in cricket. Being able to inspire others even when you are tested and under pressure is excellent attitude. St. Paul had this to say of this kind of attitude:

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”2

Being able to rise up after many defeats and face the giants in one’s life with unflagging enthusiasm and a spirit of dogged determination to fight to the very last makes people respect you.

So these are the four ways through which you can earn respect: by your behaviour, your expertize, your communication skills and your attitude. The list is not exhaustive but it is definitely a starting point from which you can start to earn respect from others.

Your 2 Minute Guide to Choosing a Course of Study

So many get confused about which branch or course of study they should choose at major turning points in their academic life. There are no pat or easy answers I can give. But I would love to share certain general guidelines.

One, ask God for wisdom to choose. He is the One who knows the end from the beginning. He is the One who has promised, I will guide you with my eye: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”1

Blood Jesus Cleanse

And wisdom is which God has promised to give to those who ask for it.2 He loves to guide his children much more than PAPI lights can guide a pilot for safe landing of an aeroplane.

Two, ask yourself what your passion is. If you are passionate about biology, opting for subjects of study related to it is a natural choice, isn’t it?

Three, ask what are the current career trends? Nothing is without change. When you look at career trends you should also try to foresee what changes might come in ten or fifteen years’ time. For example, artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, and careers related to them might dominate the world of technology for many years to come.

Four, talk to experts whom you have access to. They can be your parents, teachers, friends, relatives, subject specialists and so on. Gather as much information you can. Google it. Try to analyse. Most likely that will help you come to an informed decision.

Five, follow your heart. Occasionally, your heart is right rather than what the mind dictates. You might have a passion for English as I had, and I took a decision to not to try to please everybody but go ahead to study English Literature.

Let me conclude by saying that if by any chance you seem to have taken a wrong decision already, do not panic. Do not give up everything as lost. Don’t curse fate. In a land where more than 80% of youngsters never get a chance to study in a college, you are privileged to be one among those who got a chance to study.

Therefore, study well, work hard, and excel, in the subject you find yourself in. Someday you will be able to guide someone or empower someone to find his or her dream. Isn’t that motivating enough?

4 Vital P’s of Good Parenting

Good parenting does not happen by chance. Children need love but they also need some things more. I am presenting those things as 4 vital P’s of good parenting:

Pray for your child. There is no greater way to bless your child than commit his or her life to God’s hands.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Praise your child. Children need genuine appreciation. Instead of finding fault all the time and criticizing your children, try to make an effort to praise him or her for the good things he or she does.

Push your child. Every child grows up and finds a comfort zone. Push your child to move beyond that and excel in life. They might be hesitant to grab an opportunity. You can then push them to do so.

Play with your child. A child values nothing greater than the presence of his or her parents with them at play. It creates a bonding that time will not be able to erode.

To conclude, pray for your child, praise your child, push your child, and play with your child are the simple but 4 vital P’s of good parenting.

Mesmerizing Google Search!

Google Search Page 1 Tips Compering

The Google search engine holds millions in its magical and mesmerizing web. Its power is so huge that a first page result is a dream come true.

Imagine walking into a library geographically the size of India or China or Russia or The United States of America? How ever are you going to walk through and find the book you want! It is almost impossible. But Google search engine makes it quick and easy in the virtual world.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Now imagine a virtual library spread across the world. How ever are you going to find a needed piece of information from who knows where it is actually located and stored in? But one of the most popular ways people reach there is through the Google search engine.

The way Google search engine gives you relevant results is fascinating and frightening at the same time. Think about algorithms that match your search strings to information or content that is available in time much less than a second. Yes Google search engine fascinates us with its speed almost like the speed of lightning.

Again Google search engine sometimes frighten us with the accuracy with which it suggests what we are actually looking for? “Does Google read minds?” you might wonder. How much optimization might be going on behind the screens to track your digital footprints to give suggestions like that! Amazing, isn’t it?

Let me conclude by saying that typing out a few words on Google or speaking it out on Google Assistant has become second nature to many. Searches are going to continue and Google is happily going to dig deep to bring you answers you are looking for in quick time.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO are a set of good and proven practices followed to edge your way to the topmost results on Search Engine Results Page (SERP). But many who try to make it to the first page focus on techniques while what they should be ideally focusing is on writing good quality content. There is no subsitute for this.

Let me end this talk on Mesmerizing Google Search with that very popluar saying, “The Best Place to Hide a Dead Body is Page Two of Google.” Though I cannot say for sure who said this first there is no better way to say how popular Google Search is!

To Be Prepared with Your Speech Is the One Great Secret of Your Confidence

The fisherman prepares his nets and fishing rods. A cricket batsman prepares in the nets. The motto of the Scouts says “Be prepared.” Are you prepared?

What is the other extreme? You are invited to speak, told about a coming game or informed of an upcoming exam. What happens then. You start to postpone preparation. You meet with inertia according to Newton’s first law of motion, which states “an object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an external force.”

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Why do you yield to inertia? Simply because you hope that motivation will fall on you from the sky like the legendary apple that fell on Newton’s head. But you only experience gravity pulling you down.

So what can you do to overcome this?

First of all realize that there is nothing pleasant or romantic about preparation. It is simply honest hard work. You might have to do it alone. No one might see you do all the toil. No one will applaud you.

Secondly, look at people who perform well. They make it feel that it all happens easily. Realize that it is so only because of the long hours and perhaps months and years of preparation. There is no substitute for it.

Thirdly, the secret is to simply start. Inspiration will follow. Do not wait eternally for inspiration. Often it comes as a result of hard work and not by waiting for it. For example, if you have decided on a topic to speak just take a sheet of paper and write the topic. Note down one or two thoughts that comes. It need not be perfect and it need not be the best. That doesn’t matter. What matters is you got started.

Fourthly, try to cover as much ground during preparation. For example, you are to prepare for a speech. You might be using only forty to fifty percent of all that you prepared for the actual speech. But then what is the importance of extensive preparation?

It helps you to improvise while you perform: As a speaker a new idea will come suddenly while you speak and you can go for it like Martin Luther King did. His “I have a dream segment” was not in the original written script but was the inspiration of that historic moment.

Similarly, you might have seen a batsman in cricket execute improvised shots with great effectiveness. This is the power to improvise you get out of preparation.

The fifth secret about preparation is anticipation. You need to think about all situations that can go wrong and be prepared for it. Let me give you real life examples. I have forgotten to take the notes I prepared for an important speech. I have faced power failure at night during speeches. During your preparation you should be able to foresee situations.

The sixth secret is rehearsal. The more the better. The moment should come when you feel you have had enough of it and you feel absolutely weak and nervous and almost unable to perform. Until that point rehearse and rehearse till you are dead tired and fed up with the whole exercise.

Finally, get some good sleep the day before your performance. Today’s preparation will help you in some future crisis. The result will be a performance with confidence. Then you will be thankful that you did all that hard work when you had the chance.

Exams cause a lot of fear to you; don’t they? Expectations of parents and teachers, comparison with siblings and friends, comments from neighbours and even strangers add fuel to the fire. Now what can you do to overcome your fear of exams? Here are 7 few thoughts for you:

The first false idea about exams is that God helps those who pray. God does not help anyone who has not studied. His job is not to pull rabbits out of empty hats.

But what God does is, he answers prayer for wisdom. Now wisdom is not knowledge, it is the ability to apply knowledge you have to situations. And that wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD and avoiding cheating and malpractice in exams.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Of course, God blesses you with good memory and ability to understand your lessons and calmness of mind to write exams without undue pressure.

The second thought you need to remember about exams is that you need to discipline yourself to prepare long-term. Refer to question papers of previous years. Write down notes on your own summarising content from textbooks while you study. Use your own codes, diagrams, and tables to reduce content to points you can easily revise at the time of exams.

Writing down notes on your own will help you internalize content without having to memorize. Use these notes to have a quick look the day prior to your exams. It will help you write exam well.

The third thought is that you shouldn’t try too much to study new content at the time of exam. It will create more fear and tension. Instead focus on what you already know and try your best to make it thorough.

See, isn’t it practical to think that generally the one who sets the question paper will not be asking all the tough questions together? So don’t worry too much. There will definitely be a lot of questions simple enough for you to answer.

The fourth thought is about getting good sleep. The more you lose sleep it will affect your good judgement while you write exams. You might forget to write your hall ticket number. Or in a much worse situation, you might number your answers wrongly after having written all answers correctly. And that is disastrous!

Even more worse is you forgetting the answer you knew best. All this can happen as a direct result of losing sleep. By the way, start your exam by writing the answer you know rather than waste time thinking on the question to which the answer doesn’t come easily to mind.

The fifth thought is about efficient time management. Why is this important? Due to procrastination and postponing, many students find exams staring at them at the end of term or semester or year without them being prepared for it. Learn to plan your time using a time table. Stick to it in spite of unexpected interruptions. And when you start writing your exam first have a quick glance at the entire question paper whenever that is possible. That will give you a fair idea how to utilize given time wisely. And leave five minutes at the end of writing your exam to cross check whether you have written all the answers.

Sixthly, one of the best ways to learn is to teach. Try to teach your friends the subject most difficult for you to learn. You’ll find it surprising how fast you learn and retain what you’ve picked up. Now with online options it is easy for you to interact with friends in a combined study context; isn’t it? When you teach, you master your subject much faster than when you just try to study it for yourself.

Finally, in spite of all that you do well, it is quite possible to lose marks. Take it as part of the game. Do not allow negative thoughts to dominate your mind. If you had done your best be happy. You will have your reward.

Do not go down under criticism. You look ahead in spite of mistakes made. Think about your God-given dreams. Life has many small battles, you might lose a few but your goal should be to win the big war. And you certainly can. Start to study now and do not worry about time lost. You can still make it.

Let me conclude. It is quite natural to feel tensed before your exams. Some kind of nervousness comes when you are thoroughly prepared. It will help you to perform well in your exams.

Now cheer up. Smile. It will relax your mind. And go write your exams well.

Time Is the Stuff Life Is Made of and Laziness Is the Lover That Steals It

Are you in the habit of postponing? Then know that time is the stuff life is made of and laziness is the lover that steals it.

Worry steals away our valuable time. On the other hand planning helps to utilize time effectively. So many people dream of doing big things in life. This is mostly wishful thinking. Instead those who really want to do something meaningful in life make use of small chunks of time.

For effective utilization of time create good habits. Say No to all distractions. Work against deadlines and work towards your dreams and goals.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

The greatest thief of time is procrastination. It is the thought that I will do it later. Sadly, tomorrow also the same pattern is repeated. Therefore keep in mind that time is the stuff life is made of and laziness is the lover that steals it.

Yet another enemy of time is the thought that my life stretches long ahead. But who knows what awaits you at the next turn. Many people marry laziness before they even grow up. Such people who sleep in the embrace of laziness won’t even realize it when the very bed they sleep on is snatched away from beneath them.

A man or woman of action plans and acts as if there is no tomorrow. They always audit how they are making use of available time today. One of the best ways to utilize time is to have a sense of purpose. Those who are sent on a mission never while away their time. They know they are on duty. They are conscious that many others are depending on them to do their assigned task well.

A simple way to manage time is to allot a chunk of time for a particular task you are attempting. That will compel you to plan how to use that time. The threat today to proper time management is our own slavish mentality towards mobile screens. It is a great stealer of time. So be aware and alert that time is the stuff life is made of and laziness in life and addiction to the mobile screen are lovers that steals it.

To those who regret time lost in the past and of having wasted their lives without doing anything worthwhile, there is an astounding promise of God to hold on to: “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten!”1

Once again, let me remind all those who are regretting time lost in the past, hold on to this astounding promise of God: “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten!”

“Time is too slow for those who wait,
too swift for those who fear,
too long for those who grieve,
too short for those who rejoice,
but for those who love,
time is eternity.” — Henry Van Dyke

Simple Tips for You to Get Out of Writer’s Block

Almost all writers and authors face writer’s block from time to time. Here are a few simple steps to get your ideas flowing:

Start with something you know. It can be as simple as your home, exciting as a game you like or maybe serious like computers.

Just freely write whatever comes to mind. Think about what might interest your readers.

Try to get to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible. Too much introduction will destroy interest.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Catch the attention of the reader at the beginning itself. It can be done using a surprise element, a catchy phrase or even a story in a few sentences.

Most likely, what you write the first time will have ideas all mixed up. That’s quite normal. Leave that matter aside for a few days. Then return to it. You’ll be able to edit it and make it into a very useful article.

Now organize what you have written into paragraphs with suitable headings. Then it will be easy for others to remember what you have written.

The length of what you write can vary. It depends much on the subject matter. Yet it is wise to keep things simple and short.

Like how the clothes you wear can express you in a very unique way; writing is an expression of your inner self. The key is to discipline yourself to write.

Do not wait for inspiration always. Instead simply start writing.

Bedtime Stories Pave the Way for Success

A child who grows up listening to bedtime stories is prepared for success in later life.

Great stories of the world not only can help a child get to know the cultures of the world, it can also help the child with developing good language and communication skills too.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Perhaps what stories do the most is to help a child know that happiness and sadness are episodes that recur in life.

Stories prepare children to enjoy the good things in life and hold on during tough times. In that sense stories are the best training a child can have.

Stories teach us about lasting values like love and friendship, about the joy of being lost and then found, about the thrill of coming back home and finding acceptance as in the classic story of the prodigal son that Jesus told.

Above all stories give us hope. They paint for us life experiences and enable us to look at it from outside.

Each good ending helps us to hope and believe that it will turn out well for us at the end in spite of all twists and turns that happen before that.

Let me conclude by saying that life without stories is tasteless like the white of an egg. And a story a day brings happiness again!

Paper Planes and Paper Boats Are Not Just Simple Toys

A paper plane is a toy that can fly. It may not fly perfectly. But it is one that inspires a child to aim high in life and have great ambitions in life.

For the early wonder of running out of one’s house to see the thing that flies with that roaring noise is never ever lost on a child!

Blood Jesus Cleanse

A paper boat on the other hand kindles imagination. It is a simple toy when children are restricted not to play outdoors in the rain. Then they find joy in the boats they float in water.

Oh, how children clap and laugh and jump about at the little progress their boats make before they get carried away with the swirling currents!

In their mind’s eye they see them travel to far away lands and bring a lot of treasures back. Fun and high adventure like that of The Steadfast Tin Soldier* is what paper boats are all about.

Let me conclude saying, paper boats and paper planes, I wonder what they really are?

4 F’s That Make Life What It Is

Life is made of 4 F’s. These 4 F’s make life what it is: They are Faith, Family, Finance, and Friends.

The first F is Faith. Without faith in God it is impossible to find meaning in life. Of course, there are people who claim not to believe in God. I respect their freedom to do so. But life on earth is no accident. Therefore it has a purpose. And faith in God can help you realize that purpose.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

The second F is Family. All of us are born into a family. Of course there are many who are less fortunate and are orphaned early in life. Now the divinely ordained instiution of family has undergone many changes in the last few decades. Yet in spite of all that has changed, the family is where we learn the first lessons of being loved and cared for.

The third F is Finance. Money is not everything in life. Yet money is needed for meeting the basic necessities of life. Therefore one has to learn to earn money through honest hard work. One has to learn to be wise and prudent in spending and investing money. Greed can make you blind to the more important values in life and can make you lose compassion to others.

The fourth F is Friends. There is a wider circle than our immediate family that makes an impact in our lives. Even though it includes many, there are few who stand with us in all our needs and moments of difficulty. They are your friends. There might not be many, but only few who will have your best interest in mind. Value and cherish them.

So let me conclude. The four F’s that make life what it is are: Faith, Family, Finance, and Friends. Faith in God, love in the family, faithfulness with one’s finances, and fun with friends are what makes life what it is.

Speech on How to Make Studies Interesting for Your Children

Children love to play. Studies are boring to them. But they need to study anyway. And here are some tips to make studies interesting for children.

The first step to make studies interesting for children is to make them believe in a dream. Often parents would love to impose their dreams on children. Sometimes it works out; but often it might not. If parents can try to understand the talent, passion, and ambition of the child, they can possibly help him or her understand in what area of life he or she will excel in. And then tie their studies to that dream.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

The second step to make stduies intersting for children is to make them have a learning methodology which is fun. Just for an example, what if questions are asked in a professional quiz format with audio visual rounds and other stuff it is made of and rewards given at the end! Or what if the child is asked to take a class to parents or siblings on the topic studied in as creative ways as possible! Teach your children how to make an attempt at inter-disciplinary learning early in life by showing them analogies from other branches of study.

The third step to make studies interesting for children is to help them understand the importance and habit of preparing summary notes from the texts they learn from. The notes can include their own version of shorthand, symbolic representations, tree diagrams, flow charts and so on. Along with that they should be taught how to effectively retrieve information from these notes taken. This resource can be time-saving as well as enable scoring of high marks in examinations.

The last step and perhaps the most important step is to never compare your child with anyone else. Not even their siblings. This is absolutely negative, destructive and of no use. Give allowances for mistakes and failures. And keep on affirming that you believe in your children and that they will come up in life with flying colours.

One day they will make you proud with their achievements and thank you for believing in them.

Lead Us O LORD from Darkness to Light

Hope rises in every human heart even as light shines. Therefore “Lead us O LORD from darkness to light,” has been a prayer in the lips of many for centuries.

Light conquers darkness—whether it be the darkness of ignorance or the darkness of evil or the darkness of fear; it is the nature of light to conquer darkness.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Light brings hope. A world that has become so busy with even Nano seconds1 being taken into account has no room for failures and those who despair. But light brings hope to even those rejected and broken and marginalized.

Light shines knowledge. Ignorance can imprison people. It can chain people in superstitions, lies and deceptions. And it is the truth of knowledge that can break these chains and set people free.

Light spreads. It is impossible to conceal light and perhaps it is foolishness to attempt to do so. Therefore no one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; but puts it on its stand that it may give light to everyone in the house.2

Yes my friends,
Light conquers darkness.
Light brings hope.
Light shines knowledge.
Light spreads.

And once upon a time there walked on this earth One who embodied all these. He said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”3

About him, his beloved disciple John wrote: “In him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

Yes dear friends, the greatest of all that light is; is that light gives life. It conquers death by its life-giving power. Therefore let us continue to pray, “Lead us O LORD from darkness to light.”

Online Exams for Young Children and Fashionable Cheating

Online classes have changed the way children learn. It has also given rise to the practice of fashionable cheating. It is considered smart; but is it?

Many parents without second thoughts help students, especially young children with answers. And children get good marks. Parents are proud and children are happy.

But what are the consequences of this?

First of all, truth no longer has any weightage in the mind of the child. He or she is shown by example that it is ok to cheat by his or her parents who are most likely their primary role models. In this situation, how can you expect a child to grow up without resorting to greater malpractices in future?

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Sadly, honesty is the best policy will remain in this growing up generation, a proverb to be recited and not to be practised.

Students, 7 Steps to Overcome Your Fear of Exams!

Secondly, children will grow up thinking that getting full marks is quite easy if one is smart enough to invent ways to cheat. He or she will never be able to appreciate an objective evaluation whenever that happens. A child under the present fashionable cheating contexts grows up with no understanding of how to cope with mistakes, failures, criticism, rejection and unfavourable comparisons too.

Sad to say, a child grows up with a false estimate about one’s own intelligence and academic knowledge.

Thirdly, parents need to remember that children will grow up soon. They will learn to stand on their own feet. The Internet will become a gateway for them to a virtual world where one’s safety depends much on self-discipline. A child growing up learning fashionable cheating will soon master the craft of doing more tricks online that can bring real heartache for everyone concerned.

In all earnestness let me say that then it will be too late to correct.

Finally, what many parents are not aware of is that online video conferencing or online classes are tricky. Sometimes there can occur unexpected bugs. While they think that audio is mute, it actually might not be. When they help children write exams the instructions they give and the answers they whisper to their children are all heard by many. Many teachers might even be able to know which child is being helped. In this context, does fashionable cheating sound nice to you?

Let me conclude by saying that it is ok for parents to desire that their child get good marks and full marks whenever possible. But let that happen without sacrificing character and integrity, truth and honesty; for these are the essentials for a solid foundation for their child’s future. So dear parents, say No to fashionable cheating during online exams for the sake of your children.

A Story from Schooldays on My First Disastrous Public Speaking Attempt

I would like to share a story that happened at Christ Nagar School1 where I had done my schooling in VIII C Class during the third term. The year was 1986, the year remembered for Argentina’s FIFA World Cup win under Diego Maradonna’s mesmerizing captaincy.

At the end of first term our English Teacher left because he got a job elsewhere. At the end of the second term the same thing happened with our next English Teacher too. Then our beloved Principal, Rev. Fr. Gerard Thevalasseril, a genius as well as a strict disciplinarian, himself came to teach us English even though he was known to teach history.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

One day (I distinctly remember I was seated on the second bench, middle row), he asked me to read a portion of the English lesson that was being taught. I read. Before I sat down he lifted up his hand in a gesture of blessing and said, “Good reading, you are going to become an orator.”

I did not understand the word “orator.” And I did not have the courage to ask him then. We were all really afraid of him. He commanded that kind of respect from all of us.

So I went home and looked up the word in the Oxford pocket dictionary. The meaning was given as “good public speaker.” I laughed to myself and thought the Principal had gone crazy as I had never given a public speech before. But encouraged by his words I joined for a competition in school a couple of weeks later.

The topic was discipline. I started off with the Principal’s own words which he made it a point to repeat and emphasize on every Monday and Thursday morning school assembly: “Discipline is one’s ability to adjust oneself to the given situation.” Then I said some more of his famous words: “Where there is discipline there is order, where there is order, there is harmony, where there is harmony there is beauty . . .” That was all I could say. And nothing more.

It was a thunderous beginning; but I had nothing else to say. I never had a clue then that guts alone is not what is needed to speak; but that you need ideas as well.

I left the classroom where the competition was held, thinking, “Public speaking is not going to be my cup of tea!” And that was practically my first and last public speaking attempt at school.

But what I thought was not what God had planned as later events proved:

After passing out of school (SSLC) I got chances in elocution competitions in my church where too I made blunderous beginnings. The very first competition I participated in was conducted in Malayalam. Having sought the permission of the judges I spoke in English. I found myself staring at the ground after the first two minutes having run short of ideas amidst audible jeers from a youthful crowd.

And it was only towards the end of the third year at college that I found courage to participate in a debate. The next year as I finished speaking for an elocution competition in the college auditorium, one of my former classmates who chanced to witness it came rushing to me to say, “Bejoy, you wasted four years of college life!”

Later in 1996, one year after completing Post Graduation in English Literature from Mar Ivanios College (where I had the honour of being the Secretary of the Literary and Debating Forum), I started to teach public speaking.

At that time, I wrote a registered letter to our former School Principal telling him this story I am telling you now. I wrote to him that his words were prophetic: Not only did I become a public speaker but also had begun to train students in public speaking. I was so happy to receive the acknowledgement due slip to the letter (even though his once classy signature had shrunk to a small one due to his prevailing ill health then).

The point of my story is that I had never dreamt of becoming a public speaker or a trainer. But my Principal’s words proved prophetic in my life.

It became even more significant as two of my schoolmates attended my first batch of public speaking as well.

You can read the story of my first disastrous attempt in public speaking on Linkedin too.

Motivational Speech Welcoming Freshers to College

Red Lighted Candles Christmas GiftIt is with hopes and aspirations, dreams and ambitions that you are on this Campus this morning. You are raring to go.

Everything is new for you–new classrooms, new teachers, new friends and even new technology. But this Institution towers tall and has stood here like a spreading tree of knowledge for decades. So you have come to a place which has a rich tradition.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

But we have not fossilized. We have embraced change every step of the way. As you look around you can see how modern the facilities here are. So welcome dear students to a time of zestful living and wonderful learning.

Let me now spell out for you two things you can hold dear as you are here:

One, keep sight of your goals. Life on campus is colourful. There are many activities you can be part of. And I do wish that each one of you will find your part in some of them. We do not want you to be just gathering information from here; but we want you to learn character, discipline, compassion, and above all understand the meaning of life.

But activities should not become distractions. You should never major on minor things. Always keep things in perspective. What is important should never be marginalized. Therefore keep your goals in front of you always. Each day measure the steps you have taken towards your goals. Then you will find success.

Two, love and patience should go hand in hand. Youth is a time when love blooms in spring, blushes, and often fades in the intense heat of summer or becomes frozen in winter’s biting cold. No one has yet found out why and how love begins. Some call it chemistry; others blame it on hormones; and still many to blind chance.

Whatever it be; years of teaching and personal touch with students have taught me one thing–many stories of love, jealousy, misunderstanding, fights, tears, and occasionally happy endings have been scripted here.

But there is one golden thread life-lesson I can share with you. Anything in the name of love that makes you hasty; compels you to yield to a mad rush of emotion; which makes you offer in the fires of pleasure what that is to be guarded with utmost sanctity and care; is not love.

Therefore be patient. Let time test your love. What has to remain will remain. And then when patience has run its course; you will find joy with great peace and lasting friendship accompanying.

A Short Speech on Love ❤️

Let me conclude. As the Principal of this college, I heartily welcome each one of you wishing you that you find the best time of your life during the course of study here. Never lose sight of your goals and let love be girded and guarded with patience. Life ahead can be exciting. Wish you all God’s best in your studies.

Love and Cherish Your Children As God Wants You To

It is quite natural to be anxious about your children. Your children are God’s gift to you. So they are precious. And they are the future.

At their young age, it is as if God has entrusted you with the awesome responsibility to raise them up as God-fearing citizens. It is up to you that they look not for words of advice but for a model and an example which they can emulate and put to practice as well.

Here are a few tips that might prove useful.

#1. Celebrate the uniqueness of your child.

It is quite understandable that you want your child to excel and win the first rank if possible every time. At the same time, it is more important to realize that your child is very unique and different in his talent, temperament, attitudes and passion from even his or her brother or sister.

Therefore do not fall into the trap of comparing your child with anyone else. That is playing with fire. Remember, a dog is not a lion and a lion is not an eagle nor is an eagle a dolphin. Each has its own unique role to play.

So the first responsibility you have is to simply cherish your child as a unique person.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

#2. Appreciate your child even for small things he or she does well.

Often we shout at our children; don’t we? Even though we know we should not vent our frustration or anger resulting from a bad day at our work on our children, we do that. And often we feel sorry later.

But the best thing you can do for your child is to praise him and appreciate him for any small thing he does well. The more you do it, genuinely, the more confident your child will become. He will have a greater sense of worth and dignity.

Children who lack appreciation at home and feel rejected seek acceptance somewhere else and in teenage years can land up in bad company quickly. Why? Simply because there he or she is accepted.

So shower you children with praise and appreciation at every opportunity you get.

#3. Spend time with your children.

It is a wrong thinking that your child is satisfied with the best electronic gadgets that you buy for him. Honestly, this is absolutely wrong. Buying the most expensive and trendy things for your child might advertise your money power; but it does not satisfy your child’s basic and most important need. That is quality time you spend with them.

Remember time flies. And before you know it, and because you were busy building your status in society and empires of your own, your child would have grown up into adulthood. And then it is useless to cry that you could spend much time with them in their young age.

Remember the greatest gift you can give your child is the quality time you spend with him or her.

#4. Listen to your children.

If you don’t listen to your children, even if what they talk is silly and even plain nonsense, the day will come when they will totally shut up. And then you will never know what they think, who their friends are, what are their difficulties at school or college or the mental pressures they undergo because of their studies or a wrong relationship.

God has given you two ears so that you will listen more than you talk. It is not bravado to tell your children that you are busy and yell at them to stop talking. Encourage them to speak. Let them open up. Give them the freedom to talk to you about matters that trouble their heart. In this way you show respect to them as well.

If you listen to your children today, tomorrow you will not to have to regret that they are not listening to you.

#5. Take time to understand your child’s passion, talent and ambition.

As parents, we like our children to fit into the society’s mould. So we pressurize them to become doctors when they want to be engineers, we compel them to do civil services when they want to be journalists and so on. Of course, there are times when the wisdom of parents should overrule the wrong choices children make.

But know that children excel in what they are passionate about. So as parents try to understand what their skill sets are. Help them to have good hobbies which are creative, involves physical activity and involves teaming up with others if possible.

This is far better than giving them a tablet or laptop or expensive mobile and allowing them to chat or play video games on it for hours. And it is often equally dangerous to try to make children do what we were good at or try to realize our unfulfilled dreams through them (there are occasions when it works but mostly it is not worth the try).

If you can help your child realize what his passion and talent is, you have succeeded in putting him on the right track that leads to success.

#6. Do not label your children negatively.

I have often quarreled with parents because they often label their children negatively in front of others. One of their favourite labels is this: “Oh, my child is an introvert.” This is shocking because most of the time this has nothing to do with reality.

Maybe the child is a bit shy. So what? Given the right environment like a change of school or given more time to play team games with friends, he or she will come up fantastically well. The more parents repeat this kind of negative labelling in front of others the child starts believing a lie about himself. The child goes on to become an introvert.

Never label your children. Put a guard over your mouth so that you resist the temptation to label your child negatively especially in front of others.

#7. Never forget to pray for your children daily.

So many children who went to wayward living during their teenage years have come back to their parents and to the forgiving love of God because of the prayers of their parents–especially the heartfelt, tearful, prayers of their mothers!

When your children go to school or college commit them and especially that day into God’s care. Pray that they will be given wisdom and discernment to face life’s challenges and also study well. Pray that they will not be drawn to evil things, and bad company; for the Bible warns, “”Bad company corrupts good character.”1

Knowing that parents are praying for them is a great encouragement for children and a surety of your love and care for them.

“See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” – Jesus Christ.

Red Lighted Candles Christmas GiftLife has changed after Covid-19. Classes are online. I miss the warmth of friendship, the ambience of learning, and the fun of doing things together.

Life has thrown new challenges. In this context, as I look back at all my experience of teaching, I think there are three things every student should know. Let me share that with you.

First of all finding yourself where you are now was never your choosing.

When you were young it was your parents who decided things for you; perhaps they still do.

You might not like everything they do and might not agree with all that they decide for you. But there are no perfect parents on earth and yours are no exception. Learn to forgive in case they are wrong.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

At the same time do not give up when you find yourself in a course of study that was never your first choice.

Instead make best use of time and opportunities that are present for you. Do not compare yourself with others and feel inferior. Negative circumstances are just the right conditions for you to excel.

Who knows! If you show passion for the subject that you find yourself in today, your skill in it might just be the most wanted in the changed world tomorrow.

Students, 7 Steps to Overcome Your Fear of Exams!

Secondly, learn to do ordinary things exceptionally well.

Let me start from the simplest of examples. From drawing a margin in your notebook, writing today’s date on the blackboard when given the chance, tying your shoelace properly, are all indicators of greatness.

The point is excellence is a habit. And it starts with extraordinary attitude in what others neglect.

No task is below your dignity if you can stamp it with a divine “nothing left undone that could be done” attitude. Whatever you do, do it with enthusiasm and as if there is no second chance.

When such an attitude becomes a habit there are no end to possibilities. What is mundane and routine becomes ablaze with glory.

So then, aim high and keep on doing the ordinary with the best of your efforts every single time you attempt. Let there be no exceptions.

A Note of Appreciation to All Teachers with Love and Utmost Respect

My third thought is that you should arm yourself with hope.

Fear and worry, anxiety and despair, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can cloud your minds anytime. The future has become uncertain like never before.

Carefully laid plans are disrupted. There are more reasons beyond your control than what you can imagine.

Know that no man can promise you a bright future. Artificial intelligence will fail when predicting the future.

Yet let me remind you never to lose hope but look ahead to comebacks in life, have dreams, sing songs in blackest nights, be thankful, and rise above every setback that life can throw at you.

Hope is not found in endless waiting, but taking initiative and acting in faith when even silver linings are not seen in the clouds.
When you see waters flooding and overflowing the banks in your life, do not feel intimidated. But with trust in God step in. You will find a highway in the midst of the impossible.

So dearest of my students, in my retirement year it is a kind of farewell note that I have sounded. It is uncertain when we all will meet face to face.

Let change keep happening but let goodness and love, and true friendship remain. Thank you one and all.

Making Fun of Others Will Boomerang One Day Says Class Leader

Good Afternoon Friends,

I stand here today to speak to you because of what happened this morning. One of our classmates had to leave the class in tears. She is our friend; yet our words and actions caused her to leave in shame and distress.

Who is responsible? We all are.

And what is the problem? Somehow we enjoy jokes at other’s expense. Everybody laughs. Maybe even the person about whom the fun was all about also joins in the laughter.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

But that doesn’t mean that the fun was cool. Knowingly or without thought we have wrongly succeeded in destroying the sense of worth of another person.

Now why do we crack silly and frivolous comments about someone’s personal appearance or dress or mannerisms? It is an attempt from our part to appear smart by diminishing someone else.

But that never works. You lose respect in the eyes of others when you tear down others through gossip, slander and depreciating comments.

One thing you should remind yourself is not to sit in the seat of mockers or scoffers. Don’t join together with your friends to make fun of others.

The temptation to do so is great, but with a little patience and effort you can overcome the urge to make fun of others. Instead, if you yield to it; someday it will boomerang on you.

I appeal to all who were involved in making fun of our dear friend to understand the deep hurt you have caused her. For you, it was moment’s joke; for her it is a lifetime of pain and shame.

What did you gain by making fun of her? Let me ask you, do you become smarter when you make fun of others? Or does your beauty increase when you demean others by your thoughtless remarks?

My dear friends, I ask you to try your best to redeem the situation. Reach out to her and say with genuine hearts that you’re sorry. There is still a ray of hope that things can be straightened out. Act before it is too late.

Let me conclude by appealing to the whole student community to put to an end to the insensitive act of making fun of others.

Thank you one and all.

Sample Introductions and Conclusions to a Few High School Essay Topics

The computer will soon replace the book
Intro
Computers will soon replace the book is a topic of debate. It is highly relevant in this fast paced world where technology has changed the way man thinks and acts. Though computers has made a new kind of reading habit possible, my strong view is that books and reading of the same will remain for a long time to come.
Conclusion
In the light of the above mentioned points it is very evident that computers can never replace books. This is because the habit of reading books is so close to the human heart.

The use of mobile phones has lowered active social life and has become an addiction
Intro
Mobile phones are here to stay. They have changed the way people communicate. It has come with several advantages. At the same time we need to look at the way it has made people addicted. We always see people bowed down and looking at their screens all the time.
Conclusion
Mobile phones has made instant communication possible. But it has destroyed relationships. When members of family sit together around a dining table and all are engaged with their own mobiles, has mobile phones made life better or worse? Without doubt this addiction is going to destroy the moral fabric of society.

Money is important for happiness
Intro
Money is important for happiness is a topic that is highly relevant. In today’s world we find people in a mad rush to make money.Though such extreme love of money leads to unhappiness, the absence of needed money can cause conflicts at home. Money with contentment will bring happiness.
Conclusion
Money is needed. It is a great slave but a bad master. So if one can make it serve one’s needs, then money will bring happiness.

No other subject taught in school is as important as moral science
Intro
What is education for? Is it just to gain knowledge? Or is the purpose of education to help a man or woman live life better? If that is the purpose, then definitely moral science taught in schools has an important role to play. As technology invasion has destroyed the moral fabric of society and families in particular the relevance of the subject of moral science is more important than ever.
Conclusion
Education system should not be a factory producing the same kind of products. Instead the realization that it is investing in the lives of youngsters who are the citizens of tomorrow should define the subjects taught. Moral Science will do greater good than all other subjects because it teaches a student what life is ultimately all about.

Cinema both entertains and educates the masses
Intro
Cinema is a medium which has influenced mankind tremendously in the last one hundred years. It reflects the realities of society. In that sense it educates. But the craft of the story, the larger than life screen in which it is shown, the popularity of the actors, the music, and beautiful locations in which it is shot entertains us.
Conclusion
In the history of mankind, there has not come into being a greater form of mass entertainment than the Cinema. Through its power to change the minds of people, it has educated people about very important situations that affect the world. Cinema will continue to impact people for decades to come.

Your 2 Minute Guide to Choosing a Course of Study

The commercialization of festivals has eroded their real significance
Intro
Festivals are part of our culture. They bring people together. It is a time of joy and festivity. In the Indian context of pluralism, we are blessed with a wide variety of traditions and arts that give festivals a richness of colour. But sadly, these days too much commercialization and pop culture has slowly taken away the beauty of these festivals.
Conclusion
If you ask the older generation how a particular festival was celebrated in their younger days, they often reply with a certain sadness in their eyes. This is because festivals during their younger days represented more of human goodness and care for each other. Today like many other walks of life, business mentality has stolen the innocence of festivals.

Teenagers today are more worldly wise than their parents
Intro
Teenagers of today are better informed, better educated, better entertained, and better connected. Technology has made this possible. With cable TV, internet, mobile phones and access to information about anything at their finger tips they are certainly more worldly wise than their parents.
Conclusion
Parents can never keep pace with the kind of technology invasion that is happening. It takes young and fresh minds to do so. This is what enables teenagers to keep one step ahead of their elder generation.

Animals should not be used for drug development or medical research
Intro
Human beings any day have greater value and dignity than animals. If animals are not used for drug development and medical research, how can scientific progress be made? Think about the severe consequences of the absence of animals in such activities. Who is going to suffer? Mankind will go back to the dark ages when no medication was available for epidemics that wiped away large sections of the human population.
Conclusion
We are not advocating cruelty against animals. At the same time, we cannot do away with the use of animals in medical research and drug development.

Men and women should have equal rights
Intro
Right from the time of Adam and Eve this debate has raged in human history. Though it is declared that all men and women are created equal we do not find this equality in practice. This is a very complex and sensitive subject. But without doubt, it needs to be said that women should have equal rights with men.
Conclusion
By claiming equal rights, women are not going to overthrow men in any area of life. She will still be a great mother and builder of the family. However she will actively participate in democracy, in education, in charity drives, in sports and even in space exploration. Without women having equal rights, how will a modern society survive?

Getting Practical: Power-Pack Your Presentations

1. Prepare
No amount of talent or ability is of use until it goes through thorough preparation. The more you try to dig into a subject the more it becomes part of you. This process requires time, effort and patience. But its reward is confidence.

When you prepare for a twenty minute presentation have ready with you stuff for a one hour presentation. Even though you’ll not use the extra it shows on your face and the way you walk. It inspires confidence about you in the audience. And even before you open your mouth they feel an electric atmosphere in the air. They are ready to drink in every ounce of information that you give. What a moment!

Blood Jesus Cleanse

But if you walk up there with barely 20 minutes of prepared material, it will be like trying to fly a hot air balloon which has got a huge tear in it. It will not lift at all.

2. Involve your audience
The audience is always on your side. So why not make best use of them. At the beginning of your presentation ask them one or two friendly questions. Motivate them to answer positively.

Or seek the cooperation of one or two members in the audience to do something for you. Perhaps help with the arrangements on stage or with materials that you’ll use. Or have a show of hands or make all of them say something out loud. If you can get to know a few person’s names, use them. The audience will be delighted.

Thus involving the audience at the beginning of your presentation will get them interested in you and in what you have got to say. Then your presentation will have already succeeded even before it ever began.

3. Have a few surprises
There is nothing boring than the predictable presentation. It is like a low-scoring cricket game. No fun. So plan your presentation differently. Make it interesting. Think from the shoes of the audience. What would they delight in? What information will be new to them? How can I package it so that they’ll grab it?

Remember kids reach out for the best packaged chocolates and soft drinks. The colourful and the attractive immediately catches attention. The art of packaging your content is crucial to have a wonderful presentation. It needs much thought, creativity and imagination.

Above all, a willingness to experiment and fail at times. And learn from it. Be sure that you’ve excellent content to back it up. Otherwise you’ll disappoint your audience after beginning well.

4. Manage your time wisely
Be there before scheduled time. See that all equipment is in place and ready to function once the presentation starts. Talk to a few in the audience. Get to know what programmes happened before your event. Get a feel of how the mood of the audience is at that point in time.

Start on time. Give a rough idea to the audience as to how much time each segment of your presentation will take. And towards the end (especially if you note that the attention element is going down in the audience), tell them that you’ll be finishing in another 7 or 10 minutes as the case may be.

Give them a clue as to what important thing you are going to tell during that time. Then they’ll eagerly listen forgetting their tiredness. As for you remember to stop on time as promised.

5. Be sure to add the icing
End your presentation on a high, positive, lively note. Then it is audience-time. Most often speakers fail to utilize the after-moments. They just leave.

But this is the time that you can utilize to mingle with the audience. Answer a few questions. Listen to feedback. And criticism too.

The value of these moments will not be visible. But you’ll surely know the difference it makes when you give the next presentation.

Sample School Assembly Speech on Practising 5 A’s in Your Classroom

Respected Principal, Beloved Teachers, and my dear friends,

Classrooms are where the future citizens of India are moulded. It is there that men and women of excellence and character are shaped. Classrooms are not just places to increase one’s knowledge. More importantly, classrooms should help to create a well-rounded personality.

Now let me describe the benefits of practising 5A’s in the classroom environment. The 5A’s are Aarogya, Attitude, Academic, Athletic, and Artistic.

First of all, let us look at Aarogya or health. A good mind is found in a good body. It is also known that you need a canvas to paint a picture. Therefore practicing healthy habits inside one’s classroom is important to maintain good health. So coming to class after having a proper bath and in clean dress is important. Eating healthy food is also important to maintain health.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Now let us look at Attitude. It is said that one’s attitude determines one’s altitude. That means attitude determines how much you will climb the ladder of success in life. To do so, one should have a positive, enthusiastic and joyful attitude. It is also important to avoid a jealous attitude. This is so because we live in a competitive world and people try to pull down others to achieve success. That practice is wrong.

The next one is Academic. Wisdom and knowledge are greater than gold and riches. They not only help us to earn our bread and butter; it also helps us to be better human beings. If you look at the world around you, you will find that Mind Power is greater than muscle or money. So time spent in learning is a great investment and it will give us returns in future.

A Story from Schooldays on My First Disastrous Public Speaking Attempt

Another important aspect is Athletic. It is a well-known saying that “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” Children are natural lovers of sports and games. They love to spend time playing. It not only gives relaxation but also helps develop team spirit. Sports and games also give valuable exercise to the body. It also lays the foundation for learning to understand that winning and losing is part of the game.

Finally, we come to the Artistic aspect. As we look at the world around we find that God has made this world beautiful in a very creative and artistic way. The beauty of the flowers, the rainbow, the wild seas and forests, the loveliness of a sunset, the twinkling bright stars in the dark night sky; are all examples. And we being created in the image and likeness of God have been given the artistic ability as well. So it is important to use it in our classrooms as well. To point out a simple example, developing a good handwriting is itself an expression of the artistic in students.

After having described the benefits of practising 5As in your classroom environment namely Aarogya, attitude, academic, athletic, artistic; let me conclude in the words of Erin Gruwell: “I realized if you can change a classroom, you can change a community, and if you change enough communities you can change the world.”

Make Listening Your Top Priority to Succeed in Life

Listening is one key to success in life that is neglected often.

When you listen you gather vital information that can come to be useful in making correct decisions.

When you listen you make the other person feel valued. That itself is a key element in building lasting relationships.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

When you listen you are showing humility and a willingness to learn. It is quite the opposite of “I know it all” attitude.

When you listen you can avoid the trap of speaking hastily. For when you speak without thinking you say foolish things, and sometimes you speak angrily too.

When you listen you show great understanding. It shows your ability to see all sides of the issue as it helps you to analyse the situation, weigh the pros and cons and come to an effective conclusion.

When you listen you train yourself in the art of reading between the lines. Often what is left unsaid is more important than what people really said.

When you listen you are doing others a great favour. You are sharing with others your precious time. For many in today’s madly busy world are finding it nearly impossible to get a listening ear even within one’s home and with loved ones too.

Let me conclude by saying that listening is one of the great arts of communication, leadership, and human resources management.

Debate: “Schools of Tomorrow Will Have No Teachers or Books.”

What is the purpose of education? Is it just imparting knowledge? Or something more?

Respected teachers and my dear friends,
I stand here today to oppose the topic, “Schools of tomorrow will have no teachers or books.”

Let me try to answer the question about the purpose of education. If it is imparting of knowledge alone; it is a short-sighted goal indeed. What about character formation? What about values like honesty, punctuality, discipline, and respect? These are learned in school in the early years. It has stayed with us; and I am sure will stay with children in future too.

But the argument is that in future when attendance is marked in class, both teachers and books will be missing. I wonder who dreamed about this improbable idea!

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Let me ask again: How did the world get the gift of such a fine mind like Helen Keller? Was it not Anne Sullivan’s patient encouragement? And to those who are not aware, Ann Sullivan was the teacher of the blind, deaf and mute genius Helen Keller. And you still want to argue that there will be no teachers in future? Or read the autobiography Wings of Fire. There you will find the missile man of India, the late President Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam paying glowing tributes to the teachers who influenced him to dream big.

When you think about schools, I request you all not to just to think about schools for normal kids alone. What about children who are specially or differently abled? Do you think that such children can come into the mainstream of society without teachers or books? Or do you plan to totally ignore this special group of otherwise talented kids for the sake of embracing the bleeding edge developments in science and technology? Think about it.

“No more teachers or books” means just one thing. There will be many a graveyard and valley of dry bones in the world where the unfulfilled potential of children will lie buried. Great talent that went unnoticed. Great torches that went unlit because there was no one to light the spark. Do you still wish to entertain the foolishness that in future, schools will have no teachers? I pity you!

Now let me come to books. Just take a look at Amazon where one of the largest percentage of books are being purchased online. Printed books have not died out just because ebooks are the in thing today. Neither has reading of books taken a downward plunge in spite of all the information and entertainment available in the internet at your finger tips.

My dear friends, books are not just storehouses of knowledge. They are our companions. There is a nostalgic flavour to the reading of books that no futuristic classroom can do away with.

A Story from Schooldays on My First Disastrous Public Speaking Attempt

Let me take you to yet another field. Sports and games. In spite of all the modern technology available why do individual players and teams have coaches? It is simply because the personal care of a teacher and mentoring cannot be substituted by anything else. So also future schools of tomorrow cannot do away with teachers.

Let me conclude. Many of the problems teenagers face today cannot be solved by artificial intelligence or smart classrooms. Relationship issues, substance abuse, stress because of broken homes, the search for meaning of life are part and parcel of young lives. Do you think absence of teachers are going to help them in any way? Or do you think more smart gadgets and smarter apps are going to make youngsters have better emotional quotient?

My dear friends, schools of tomorrow will continue to have better teachers and inspiring books as well. Thank you.

Class Leader Felicitates Teacher on Her Achieving Best Teacher Award

Life is beautiful when we have people around who love us and genuinely care for us.

Today we have here with us a person our dear teacher who has been like a mother and friend and guide to each one of us.

We are all gathered here with hearts full of gratitude to felicitate her. Dear teacher, we your students are indeed proud of your achievement. We are immensely privileged to share with you the joy of you being selected as the best teacher.

There are three things I wish to highlight this evening.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

One, your commitment to excellence. There is nothing that you do that is not stamped with your passion for making the best efforts possible.

Two, your depth of knowledge. There is a welcome freshness to your class each day. We are left yearning for more when the bell rings to signal the end of class.

Three, your personal touch in our lives. You had a gentle word of encouragement to each one of us when we were down. For all our little heartaches, you had time to listen to us. More than what you have taught us, it is the fact that you cared that has touched us.

Above all this we all know that you are a loving wife and an affectionate mother. We are happy that you have found a work-life balance that has given us such a wonderful teacher in you.

There is much more to say. But some things remain etched in memory when it is short and sweet.

So let me wish our very dear teacher many more awards and recognitions in the years ahead.

Let me conclude.

Someday in the future you will have the joy of finding each one of us come back to you with stories of how you influenced, moulded, inspired, and motivated us to excel in life.

Some lamps are small but the flares they light can be seen miles around. Thank you dear teacher for lighting brilliant flares all around.

Professor Speaks at the Meeting to Felicitate Rankholders

Respected dignitaries on the dais, colleagues, parents, the rank holders and dear students.

A timely word is a treasure that is wrapped in timeless memory .

We are gathered here to celebrate the achievement of these seven young minds who through their persevering effort has won personal distinction as well as accolades for our Institution. Their truly deserving achievement reminds us of Napoleon’s words, “Victory belongs to the most persevering.”

Though it is only (Name), who was my student in English Literature, the rank holders from other Departments of this College are known to me as well.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Some of them have overcome a variety of difficult situations and have come out with flying colours. On this joyful occasion, let me remind just three things.

First of all, not all but only very few have the privilege of studying in a college. And you have set yourself apart from that elite group and have carved a niche for yourselves as rank holders which will always be etched in golden letters in the annals of our history. So be thankful to God, to your parents, to your teachers and all those who supported you so that this achievement was made possible.

Secondly, there is a principle in life that the more you give, the more you are able to receive and still keep on giving. As you walk out of this Campus today, think how much the time you had spent here influenced and impacted you. Think about it not just in terms of knowledge gained but more in terms of relationships, the wisdom of life lessons, the guidance and encouragement of teachers and the value of the brand identity of this prestigious institution you now call your Alma Mater. Think about what you can give back to this Institution and the community at large. From now on, it is a time to give back and gift back in multiplied measure all that you got from here.

Finally, your achievement shows all the others especially the students who will be appearing for their final examinations this year that beginning well is good and important; but greater still is the art of finishing well. Lot many of youngsters today lack this determination. My dear students determine to finish well and finish strong in life. Your ability to dream of great achievements is important, but greater still is the will to win and the discipline to achieve it. It is this burning desire that will bring you success in the end as has been shown by these seven brilliant minds.

I take this opportunity to wish each one of the seven rank holders God’s very best. May life unfold for you in all its loveliness, may you find greater success in all that is to come, and may you find greater meaning and purpose as you contribute to society through your work and career in later years.

On behalf of this college community, the management, the principal, the teachers, parents and students, I once again congratulate you on your achievements and wish you all success. Thank you for accepting our invitation and being present for this meaningful and august felicitation meeting. Let this be not an end but a beginning; let the journey continue; and may you find new knowledge, new avenues of service, new opportunities for growth and may you find success in all your endeavours.
Thank you.
