Air, water, soil, and noise pollution are commonly talked about. The advancement in technology and the giant leaps made in development has caused harm to our environment and to ourselves. But today I would like to speak about the pollution of our minds which nobody talks about much. This pollution is immersive and no one can easily escape the web it weaves.

Pollution of our minds is a reality. There are several ways in which it can happen. Pollution of the mind happens when the gateways of the mind like the eyes and ears are open to pollutants.

We live in a highly visually stimulated world. Technology has brought lot of distractions too right in front of our eyes along with all the educational, informational and entertainment possibilities it offers. The question is, “Are children taught to filter all that they see?” Does our educational system teach them how to discern whether what they consume on the internet is polluting material or not?

As there are non-biodegradable waste, so also there are pollutants of the mind that are non-erasable. Some kinds of conversations we listen to which fall into the category of slander and gossip remain in the minds with permanence. So also certain kinds of literature we read, movies or videos we watch, or sensational news we consume that glorify evil; all put their roots deep down in our minds.

So here are three simple steps to avoid pollution of the mind:

One, avoid and run away from places, situations, and entertainment, which you know can poison your mind.

Two, do not engage in conversations that make fun of others, mock, and demean people.

Three, involve in creative activities and cultivate good friendships in life.

To conclude, let me remind you that in this age of Space travel and tourism, we have created a huge quantity of debris in Space already, thus polluting what was majestic, glorious, and reflecting God’s incomparable wisdom and power. We’ve polluted everything possible, filling it with junk. Therefore, let me plead with you not to let your minds become a garbage graveyard from where nauseating smell emanates and the smoke of burning never stops. 

Fashions Mean More Than What It Says

Fashions change. They come and go like the rise and fall of empires. And fashions do mean more than what you see outwardly.

One, fashions reflect popular trends and culture. They show the tendency of people to be part of the crowd, to be part of the in thing or the thing in vogue.

Two, fashions capture a snapshot of history. For example,we easily identify the hats or bonnets which ladies of the Victorian era wore when we see pictures; don’t we?

Three, fashions have a way of making a reappearance with minor changes. This reminds of King Solomon’s statement, “there is nothing new under the sun.”1

Four, fashion designing as a career is there because people are conscious about fashions, about creativity and about making style statements. So there are creators of fashion, models and celebrities who in fashion shows and fashion weeks that showcase them, sporting icons and movie stars who popularize them, and the consumers who embrace that with both hands.

To conclude, after Adam and Eve sinned against God in the garden of Eden and realised that they were naked and felt shame for the first time in their lives and sewed fig leaves together, God clothed them with garments of skin. Ever since then clothing has persevered the modesty and dignity of men and women. And fashion has added colour and celebrations to it. Of course, fashions make people feel good as they look beautiful or handsome in good dresses.

But whatever it be, changing fashions also remind us that human life and on earth is fleeting, ephemeral, short-lived, transitory, and not permanent.

Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is much talked about because most of us think negatively all the time; isn’t it? We worry too much and get stressed when we face problems. And therefore it is not surprising that so many motivational books on positive thinking have been and still are best sellers.

Let me try to say a few thoughts on positive thinking:

First of all, positive thinking is a deliberate act of the mind. It doesn’t happen naturally as most of us seem to be wired to be negative thinkers. Thinking positively is like switching on the lights so that the darkness of negative thoughts cannot stand before the light.

Secondly, positive thinking is about choices. It is about choosing to keep your mind focused on good things. For there are lot of negative suggestions that bombard your mind from external sources all the time—even as you walk the streets, listen to conversations, or watch something on television or YouTube. So choose life instead of death, dreaming instead of defeat, hope instead of despair, and light instead of darkness.

Thirdly, positive thinking is about trust in God. There are realities of life which we cannot ignore or close our eyes to. No amount of positive thinking can change or reverse certain situations. It is during those times you need to rely on the promises of God like, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,”1 or “I am with you always,” or “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” as written in the Bible.

Finally, positive thinking is about looking ahead with hope. There are definitely bad days in each of our lives. Days in which we make mistakes, commit blunders, lose our temper, say things which we regret, entertain lots of bad attitudes in our minds and so on. In spite of all that, it is about believing that God has not given up on on you. There is his mercy and compassion ever available to you. So have hope even when all else seems lost.

So my friends, life can throw a lot of changes especially as the world is nearing its end. The moment I say this, negative thoughts might have clouded your minds. That is why positive thinking is needed even when the world is about to end.

The Role of Sports and Games in the Life of Children

Sports and games are good for children. They help children to have fun, relax, and socialize with other children.

Sports and games provide an opportunity for children to have physical activity. It is a great way to stay away from the mobile or computer.

Another important element about sports and games is that it helps children to have a healthy competitive spirit. They learn to succeed as well as fail without losing heart; thus learning sportsmanship.

Then there is the benefit of developing teamwork. In a world where team playing abilities play a crucial role in determining success in one’s career, having a background of sports and games will be an asset.

Perhaps a lesser known benefit of playing sports and games is that children learn discipline. They learn to play according to the rules. Also, they learn that all sports and games have a playing field where the game happens within predefined boundaries.

Again, playing sports and games enable children to respect authority. Each of the sports and games has a referee or umpire who decide on all the important matters related to the play. No matter how great a player is individually, he or she has to obey those decisions.

Finally, sports and games help develop leadership skills. We know of captains who have shown great leadership skills. For many children, playing sports and games give them a chance to step into leadership roles and excel in exercising leadership. 

To conclude, every child should explore the possibilities of sports and games. They are fun and they are healthy. They make one’s childhood and teen years colourful and memorable.

Reply to the Toast: A School Student’s Outstanding Speech!

Respected Teachers and my dear friends,

Thank you School Leader Elect for proposing the toast and wishing all of us outgoing students the very best. Those words really touched our hearts and as you said, we will keep it our motto to excel in our pursuits and make the name of our school even more glorious. And I am indeed honoured to be given the chance to reply to the toast.

On behalf of all the outgoing students I wish to place on record the extraordinary influence the teachers and the ambience of this school has been in our lives the past ten years. The growing up phase was challenging but looking back it was eventful, and now it is part of our nostalgia.

I never thought I will ever get a chance to reply to the toast in this last year of mine at school. I was always a backbencher, a loser, a failure and the naughtiest kid in school.

I was always having homework to be finished, wrote impositions more times than all of you ever did, and received from teachers punishment in various forms. I leave the school with the thought that in this one thing at least I was first.

Let me now open my heart to you. I find that in today’s mad rush for success and becoming first, all that people think are of themselves. I is first and I is all that matters to most. We, unfortunately, live in a self-first and self-last and self-is-all world.

But there are people like me who long for love and acceptance. My rebellion, my naughtiness, my practical pranks were all my failed attempts to connect with you all.

I am not slow to study; I do believe I have a gifted mind. But i decided early on that I simply want to fail. You ask me, “Why?’

My dear friends, do know that all homes are not the same. There are broken homes where it is unrest always. Happiness is unreal to children like us who come from there.

There is no one to ask why you behave like this. All demand performance. There is no space for compassion, understanding or love in this scheme of things.

As I look back, it was a procession of negative labelling on all fronts: from relatives, schoolmates, and sadly some teachers too. It was like mud and slimy dirt thrown to stick on my white shirt: “You’re good for nothing,” “Bad boy,” “A shame to parents,” “Introvert,” “Loser,” and “A born failure,” were some of them. They still hurt. And I don’t know whether ever there will come a time when its shame will be washed away or its sting removed.

But I learned some time ago that holding a grudge will make all those labels come true. Therefore with great struggle I try to brush self-defeating thoughts aside each day.

I stand here today to say thank you for the opportunity given to one who did not rise up to your expectations. I stand here to thank my physical education teacher who one day after having made me run eight times around the ground asked, “My boy, tell me, what do you fear most?”

It was the first time someone was seeing me as a person—an individual with hopes and dreams, with fears and doubts like anyone else.

He, with that one question, broke my defense. I had a tough look and an unfriendly behaviour. Yet my teacher showed the guts to peel off that mask. But I am grateful he did it one on one and not in front of the crowd.

I broke down and cried that day. My fear of my parents separating, and losing one of them perhaps to death, finally came out.

From that moment on, it was a long journey to where I stand now doing what I have never dreamt of and had a fear of always: Standing in public and speaking in front of you all.

I thank you my dear teacher for shining that light in my darkness, for igniting hope in my despair, and for believing in me when others called me a failure.

I conclude in the hope that each naughty kid like me will meet a teacher or friend who believes in the potential of a prodigal son who returns home!

To conclude, perhaps one of things you never forget is the experience you have with people you would have never met otherwise. I think that it is one of the richest experiences anyone can have in life. So get ready for your next travel. Exciting moments ahead.

There are a huge number of career opportunities in the field of gaming. Some of them are game designer, game developer, sound engineer, gaming critic etc.

There are a lot of people who make a career in gaming as has become an industry generating billions of dollars. It is a chance for many to convert a hobby into a career too.

Now coming to entertainment, there is no doubt that the young generation are totally into gaming. It is a totally different experience these days in contrast to the solo video games that children used to play a generation ago.

Today, it has become competitive and online with multiple players (multiplayer games) joining from across the globe. The experience is really intense as you can play against or play along with others.

There are fans and followers for computer games like you have for football, basketball or cricket. The genres available in gaming are so many as this wikipedia post shows.

Well, there are several stories we hear every now and then about gaming becoming addictive. Youngsters lose interest in studies and in having a real social life with their friends. Some lose sleep and forget to eat food at proper times and thus destroy their health.

A lot of psychological problems also do result. This is because the experiene provided by gaming is so immersive and addictive. It is a kind of virtual world invading the real world and conquering it.

Of course, many might not like to mention the addictive aspect of gaming and a lot more might disagree saying that there are many benefits of gaming. Of course, there are benefits but when gaming becomes extremely addictive, human relationships suffer.

Let me conclude saying that with technology improving each day and with lot more youngsters being involved in the world of gaming, it will continue to open up new career options, continue to entertain and continue to be addictive.

The question is, will you be able to maintain your edge and expertise in the career of gaming over the years? Will there be a boredom emerging through entertainment? And finally, will addiction to gaming become fatal? Think about these earnestly.

It is said that “Punctuality is the politeness of kings.” No one expects those in authority who exercise power over others to be on time. But if they are punctual, it is one of the ways in which they show respect for others.
Lack of punctuality can be due to lack of attitude, lack of discipline, and lack of preparedness.

First of all, lack of attitude. Those who don’t care for others are not punctual. They don’t think it is a problem to keep others waiting. But think about how many hours are wasted when hundreds of people are kept waiting. So esteem others and value others’ time.

Secondly, lack of discipline. Getting up early can make a whole lot of difference to one’s day. But many neglect this. Also, spending time on distractions especially on social media makes people lose sense of priorities. So important things are left undone. Therefore promised delivery of services and products and assignments get delayed.

Thirdly, lack of preparedness. Tardiness, the opposite of being punctual, is often a result of not being fully and thoroughly prepared. It is clearly seen that those who try to gather together the needed resources, equipment, or accessories at the last minute often keep others waiting. A day or event begun with full preparedness has a ring of confidence to it.

To conclude, just imagine a busy airport. Think about the huge delays that can occur if planes were kept waiting for all those who are delayed. When it comes to serious things like catching a plane, people show attitude, discipline, and preparedness to be on time. So it is possible to be punctual if you will it with your full heart and mind.

 

Children’s Day Celebrations: Speech for Students

Respected Principal, Beloved Teachers, and my Dear Students,

This is our very special day. On Children’s day, I as the school leader, take this opportunity to remind you that we are like roses in a garden—we bloom with a variety of colours and spread fragrance and joy all around.

Today, we remember Chacha Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on his birthday. He truly loved children and believed in the promise that we hold for tomorrow and a better future.

On Children’s Day today, we come together from a variety of backgrounds. We come together without any barrier of our differences coming in between us. We celebrate our friendship and dream of our future together.

We have hope that in spite of all that is gone wrong in this world today, we will be able to build a better future together—a future that will be safe for the children of tomorrow. To this end, we pledge ourselves to work together hand in hand and standing shoulder to shoulder.

On Children’s Day today, we look forward with marvel at the tremendous change that the world of technology brings to us. Nearly everything unfolds at the tip of our fingers on our mobiles. Even classroom experience has changed with online classes. But let us remember that the virtual world too needs to be approached with caution even as we leverage the benefits of the same.

Let us strive to maintain friendships, nurture values, build character, and have high aims and ambitions. The need of the hour is to have excellence in our thoughts and actions. Therefore let us put in an honest effort to make our teachers and parents proud by mastering life skills and emotional intelligence along with our academic knowledge.

On Children’s Day today, let us look around us. Let us listen not with our ears but with our hearts as well. There is a world of children out there who do not enjoy the privileges that we do. Education is a dream to many. Many children, while we study, roam the streets to find some work that will bring them something to eat. Some less fortunate children have to labour hard each day at their homes or places of work even though child labour is prohibited by law.

While we celebrate Children’s day, let us make an effort to reach out to such children. Let us dream of making a future for them too. I know it is not within our power to do much. But that shall not prevent us from appealing to our parents and well wishers to lend a helping hand. We cannot and should not forget those children who also so rightly deserve a good education, a bright future and dignified living.

I cannot conclude without saying a word of thanks to all our beloved parents and teachers. Without you being part of our lives there is no meaning to our Children’s Day celebrations. We love you and respect you with all our hearts. Seeking your best wishes and blessings to each one of us. Corruption is nothing new. It has been there as long as history goes back in time. Today, let me sketch in very quick terms what corruption is and what probably leads to corruption.

Corruption is making money illegaly and secretly using power one has. It affects people and societies negatively. It can create lack of trust in people and institutions especially democratic ones. Some forms of corruption can impact our environment too. It also topples justice and creates more inequality in society.

Now what causes corruption. Let me just look at the motives that make people become corrupt. Dissatisfaction with one’s economic condition, greed for money, envy of one’s neigbour, the hope of getting rich quickly, being overly influenced by the glamorous lifestyles of people especially seen through social media can all be motives making people corrupt.

Sadly, what is happening is that we find children take pledges at school assemblies against corruption. But they are not taught how to avoid the temptation to become rich by unlawful means or the various ways in which people become corrupt. If such awareness can be provided they will know beforehand and be forewarned about the dangers of corruption.

Before I conclude, we need role models to look up to and learn from. We need to be inspired by those few who raise their voices against corruption. And the least each one of us can do is to keep ourselves from becoming corrupt. The world will certainly witness new forms of corruption, but let us be firm in our stand against it.

Creation versus Evolution Debate

Creation versus Evolution debate has been raging for many decades now. The world is still divided. In this speech, let me argue for Creation.

First of all, every country has a currency. It is with that currency all transactions and trading is done. Now the interesting thing is that the currency as far as Creation is concerned is faith. It believes in God who created the world and the universe and all living beings. But more interesting is the fact that it requires greater faith to believe in Evolution which is a theory propagated as science.

Secondly, everything has a beginning. Creation says that “In the beginning God created.”1 So, the beginning was God-initiated. On the other hand, there is no cause for beginnings as far as Evolution is concerned. It was all chance that brought everything together from simple to complex. Is that true? You need to suspend logic and reason to believe it; don’t you?

Thirdly, look at the order and design and harmony everywhere. Just look at the innumerable stars, and galaxies in the vast unexplored space and universe. Look at the way in which one tiny unseen cell becomes a complex human being—a system of systems; truly “fearfully and wonderfully made!” 2 Look at the atomic and the sub-atomic and the microscopic. Do you think the order and design and harmony came by chance?

Fourthly, what about purpose? Life exists only on Planet Earth. The Planet Earth has just the right environment, the right distance from the sun, atmosphere, water, and all other elements needed to support life. So the earth was created to be inhabited.3 Now man is going to the moon, and sending people to space as part of space tourism, and even sending missions to Mars and other planets. But nowhere is man going to find life. Because earth was the only planet where human life has been created with a purpose to know God, love him, praise him and live in friendship with him.

That brings us to our next point. Creation as we see today is marred. Something had gone wrong. We find that in spite of literacy and education, modern civilizations; advancement in technology and artificial intelligence; there is hatred and war, crime and lack of love. Why? Who is to be blamed? Did God get things wrong? God did not want to create robots. So the first man and woman had the ability to choose. And they chose to disobey God. What it meant was they wanted to run things independent of God. In plain terms, it was rebellion against God. The Bible calls it sin. And rebellion had to be punished by death. So decay and death entered the world as a result of man’s sin against God. Now let me ask you, how does evolution explain death?

Again, where did man get his intelligence from? From where comes his ability to smile, to have friendship, to communicate, and above all to love? You might agree with me, that men and women in all cultures have that bent of mind to worship something? Why is that so? What about languages? Did they evolve? What about the dress we wear? Why is that only men and women wear dresses and no other creature has the need to do so?

Finally, where is life headed to? Does Evolution throw any light on where human history is headed to? Creation story tells us that the whole creation is groaning in bondage until God creates a new heaven and a new earth.4 The old will be gone; and God will create everything new.5 The basis of this transformation will be God’s intervention in human history when his Son, Jesus, hung on the cross on a hill outside the city of Jerusalem and bled to death for the forgiveness of the sin of all mankind. Someday soon there will come a final judgement before the renewal and refreshing of all things. Those who refuse to believe can hold on to evolution.

Let me conclude. Isn’t it logical to believe in Creation which gives us a sense of the most important questions of life:

Who created me?
Why am I here?
Where am I headed to?
Does it matter how I live my life on earth?
Is there life beyond death?
Can I find God?
Does God love me?

Oh, yes, such big questions of life are answered in Creation. So my friends, consider. On what are you basing your confidence? Would you like to believe in something simple even a child can believe in? Or do you want to place your trust in Evolution which has a shaky beginning, has a lot of missing links, degrades the dignity of man created in the image and likeness of God6 to that of animals, and cannot account for the moral depravity in mankind and the reality of death? Think about it. Your destiny will rest on your decision.

First of all our hearts want to say thank you dear parents and beloved teachers for all what you have been to us, for all the wisdom you have shared with us and for all the encouragement you have given us.

Secondly, all of our hearts are anxious. In this increasingly technology driven world when many are compelled to spend much time online by choice or chance; it is becoming difficult to find true friendships. And when around the table talk during family dinner in many homes have been stolen by busyness and addicition to mobile screens, we children, each one of us feel like stranded on islands of our own making.

Thirdly, let me say we are ambitious. There are lot of more career opportunities ahead. There are a wide variety of courses to choose from to reach there. What our school has taught us is to pursue our goals and dreams. We are so happy that our parents and teachers have instilled in us the courage to persevere, to put in honest hard work, and have untiring enthusisam and hope in the midst of failures and setbacks in life.

Above all, we are learning to be compassionate and kind-hearted. We were given a lot of opportunities to get to know how people struggle to make ends meet in the communities around us. We were given many chances to make a difference in a few lives. I am sure that these efforts and the willingess to lend a helping hand will not vapourize like dreams but stay embedded in our minds for a long time to come.

Therefore dear parents and beloved teachers, thank you once again for the light you have shone on our paths; it shall be our beacon of hope when clouds obscure the sun. Thank you for the seeds scattered on good soil; they will surely sprout, grow, multiply and yield a great harvest. Thank you for your love; for even in our moments of rebellion we still believe in the goodness you have reserved for us in your hearts. There shall be a come back home. God bless you all. Thank you.

Thirdly, listen to self-deprecating comments that you make. Occasionally that can be part of humour. But if you use that constantly, it can be an indicator of the struggle you have with your sense of self worth, esteem and significance. Therefore cut off that kind of talk. It only pulls you down.

Finally, listen to little speeches of despair that escape your lips. You might have never noticed it. But after spending time with you; your friends will leave with their hearts heavy, with lack of happiness, and clueless why their minds are feeling drained. It is because of the pessimistic, no-hope-ahead, kind of talk you might be tempted to speak. Avoid that at all costs or you’ll lose your valuable friendships before you know it.

To conclude, let me say that identifying these four kind of speeches and avoiding them is not enough. You need to start thinking differently. St. Paul tells us: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”1 When you do so, quite naturally, you will learn to speak words that, instead of pulling you down into a spirit of despair, will build you up.

So what makes our school special? What makes me love my shcool with all my heart?

Let me try to spell out a few reasons why this school is so special to you and me. It is not the buildings or the infrastructure that makes this school dear to us. There is something beyond the physical.

First of all, this school has always been student-friendly. It has welcomed us with both arms and made us feel that this is our second home. In fact, we have spend more time here than in our homes during our waking hours. And each day we carried home to our parents and brothers and sisters some story that became part and parcel of our lives; didn’t we? That is why I love my school and so is it why you do too.

Secondly, this school has always had excellent teachers. They have been good in their knowledge; but beyond that they have been truly great in treating each one of us with dignity. They have helped us see our hidden potential and encouraged us at every turn. They have sacrificed much personal comfort to give us a vision and a dream about our bright future.

To borrow words from Henry Van Dyke, let me promise you my dear teachers that for all the sparks you ingited in us; some day we will shine a light back on you. Yes dear teachers, even when years roll by we cannot forget you. Even though we may not be coming back to be in daily touch with you; our hearts will always have in it a place for you filled with gratitude. Dear teachers, you are the reason why I love my school with all my heart.

Finally, I love my school for all the values that it has taught me. Discipline, integrity, sportsmanship, pursuit of excellence, compassion to people, unwavering optimism and hope, and much more came to me from this institution. They were not only taught but it has been integrated into the very culture of this school. We go from here not just having bookish knowledge but as well-rounded personalities with excellence of character. Thus my school has truly served the purpose of education. For these invaluable contributions, I love my school and I am sure you too share the same.

My dear friends, my heart is sad at this time of parting. Along with you, I too say goodbye to this beautiful campus, the classrooms, the playgrounds. A few days from now the band that plays, the morning assemblies, the chit chat during the breaks, the festive arts and literary competitions, science exhibitions, talents day, and the like will not be ours. But life moves on. We move out to let another set of youngsters take over. But nothing will change the love I have for my school. Thank you.

But our joy came in a different sense. It came as new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. It is this sense of awareness that makes growing up a joy.

Secondly, growing up is about freedom and responsibility. When we were young, we had to depend on our parents for everything. Slowly but surely as we started growing up, each one of us became independent in varying degrees. There is a tendency in our teens to rebel and look down on others as we exult in our new-found freedom.

But that is being short-sighted because there is a long journey ahead of each one of us and in a short time we will learn that we have to depend a lot on others to succeed in life.

So freedom is to be used with restraint and caution and also with a sense of responsibility. Let us remind us ourselves of Nehru’s words in his Tryst with Destiny speech that rang out in that midnight hour of freedom where he said: “Freedom and power bring responsibility.”

Thirdly, growing up is about leaving things behind. No one else said it more poetically than St. Paul who said, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.”1

Yes, there is a lot of emotional and childish habits, reactions, and behaviour that we need to leave behind. That is a sure sign of growing up and becoming a man or woman in a true sense of what that means.

Fourthly, growing up is about coping with and adapting to changes. There are changes that affect our physical appearance, emotional make up and thinking patterns. These are needed to make us ready for our life ahead. Some of us might find these changes delightful, others may find it a bit uncomfortable especially when it comes to becoming self conscious in front of others.

Some of us shy away from the limelight; others are daring in their adventures. Yet the fun of it is learning to cope with change.

Finally, growing up is about looking ahead with hope. The future is uncertain. In spite of careful planning, things can go wrong. But even when darkness falls; you can trust God with your future. I cannot stress that thought enough: the antidote to fear of the future in an ever changing world is trust in an unchanging God.

Let me conclude. Growing up is an exciting part of life. Along with new discoveries can come new interests, hobbies, peer pressure, and new temptations. There can be the pressure of expectations of parents, teachers, and friends. There can be the challenge of making mistakes and facing criticism for our failures too. But none of these things need to discourage us.

For as the poet Robert Browning in his poem Rabbi Ben Ezra says,
Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in His hand
Who saith “A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!”

A teacher is a balanced mix of discipline and gentleness at the same time. He or she is one who is a role model by setting an example for the students in speech, action, discipline, and character.

A teacher is one who has the ability to spot the hidden potential in a child and encourage the child to live true to the dreams in his or her heart.

A teacher is one who is not satisfied with the knowledge of the past; but is always updated on what is new in his or her subject. He or she makes an extra effort to bring something new that is interesting, informative, inspiring, and even inter-disciplinary to class each day.

This extra effort is a thing of joy for the teacher and extremely satisfying as the class responds enthusiastically and attentively.

A teacher is one who listens carefully and attentively to what students tell him or her. In other words, when students find in a teacher a caring heart, they trust the teacher with even personal and intimate matters of the heart that they cannot share with even their best friend.

Above all these things, a teacher inspires. One timely word of appreciation from a teacher can ignite a spark and a fire in the lives of students.

Thus a teacher shining a small burning light even in a remote village might be igniting a fire in the life of a brilliant student who will carry that to the ends of the earth one day!

In the perspective of eternity, we can miss the mark if we don’t prepare for it by making wise decsions and honouring God in our hearts on earth.

Yes friends, missing the mark is something each one of us should fear. This fear should make us have sharp focus, avoid distractions and unhealthy habits. This fear should make us strive with all our heart and mind and soul and strength not to miss the mark.

Four Sure Ways You Can Earn Respect from Others

Many demand respect but sadly it cannot be commanded. On the other hand, respect is hard-earned. In this short speech let me highlight four ways you can earn respect from others.

First of all, you can earn respect with your behaviour. Let it be courteous. Treat others with the same kindness you expect them to show to you. Carry yourself with dignity and never be frivolous in good company. Remain humble and do not try to blow your own trumpet even when you have many ahcievements to your credit. Then people will respect you.

Secondly you can earn respect with your expertize. Be extremely good at something. It can be your academics, work, or hobby or something else you are passionate about. When people see your skill and the ease with which you get things done, they’ll naturally respect you.

Thirdly you can earn respect through your communication skills especially through the way you speak. Speech reveals the stuff and character you are made of. A gentle tongue can break a bone1 says the Bible. You might need to be persuasive and you might have to command at times, but when tempered with gentleness it cannot fail to earn respect from others.

Avoid diminishing people in front of others. Do not make fun of them or mock them. But with your conversation build them up in having a better sense of their worth and esteem.

Another important way you can earn respect is by your attitude. Being cool under pressure is something that marks out great captains in cricket. Being able to inspire others even when you are tested and under pressure is excellent attitude. St. Paul had this to say of this kind of attitude:

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”2

Being able to rise up after many defeats and face the giants in one’s life with unflagging enthusiasm and a spirit of dogged determination to fight to the very last makes people respect you.

So these are the four ways through which you can earn respect: by your behaviour, your expertize, your communication skills and your attitude. The list is not exhaustive but it is definitely a starting point from which you can start to earn respect from others.

So many get confused about which branch or course of study they should choose at major turning points in their academic life. There are no pat or easy answers I can give. But I would love to share certain general guidelines.

One, ask God for wisdom to choose. He is the One who knows the end from the beginning. He is the One who has promised, I will guide you with my eye: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”1

And wisdom is which God has promised to give to those who ask for it.2 He loves to guide his children much more than PAPI lights can guide a pilot for safe landing of an aeroplane.

Two, ask yourself what your passion is. If you are passionate about biology, opting for subjects of study related to it is a natural choice, isn’t it?

Three, ask what are the current career trends? Nothing is without change. When you look at career trends you should also try to foresee what changes might come in ten or fifteen years’ time. For example, artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, and careers related to them might dominate the world of technology for many years to come.

Four, talk to experts whom you have access to. They can be your parents, teachers, friends, relatives, subject specialists and so on. Gather as much information you can. Google it. Try to analyse. Most likely that will help you come to an informed decision.

Five, follow your heart. Occasionally, your heart is right rather than what the mind dictates. You might have a passion for English as I had, and I took a decision to not to try to please everybody but go ahead to study English Literature.

Let me conclude by saying that if by any chance you seem to have taken a wrong decision already, do not panic. Do not give up everything as lost. Don’t curse fate. In a land where more than 80% of youngsters never get a chance to study in a college, you are privileged to be one among those who got a chance to study.

Therefore, study well, work hard, and excel, in the subject you find yourself in. Someday you will be able to guide someone or empower someone to find his or her dream. Isn’t that motivating enough?

Exams cause a lot of fear to you; don’t they? Expectations of parents and teachers, comparison with siblings and friends, comments from neighbours and even strangers add fuel to the fire. Now what can you do to overcome your fear of exams? Here are 7 few thoughts for you:

The first false idea about exams is that God helps those who pray. God does not help anyone who has not studied. His job is not to pull rabbits out of empty hats.

But what God does is, he answers prayer for wisdom. Now wisdom is not knowledge, it is the ability to apply knowledge you have to situations. And that wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD and avoiding cheating and malpractice in exams.

Of course, God blesses you with good memory and ability to understand your lessons and calmness of mind to write exams without undue pressure.

The second thought you need to remember about exams is that you need to discipline yourself to prepare long-term. Refer to question papers of previous years. Write down notes on your own summarising content from textbooks while you study. Use your own codes, diagrams, and tables to reduce content to points you can easily revise at the time of exams.

Writing down notes on your own will help you internalize content without having to memorize. Use these notes to have a quick look the day prior to your exams. It will help you write exam well.

The third thought is that you shouldn’t try too much to study new content at the time of exam. It will create more fear and tension. Instead focus on what you already know and try your best to make it thorough.

See, isn’t it practical to think that generally the one who sets the question paper will not be asking all the tough questions together? So don’t worry too much. There will definitely be a lot of questions simple enough for you to answer.

The fourth thought is about getting good sleep. The more you lose sleep it will affect your good judgement while you write exams. You might forget to write your hall ticket number. Or in a much worse situation, you might number your answers wrongly after having written all answers correctly. And that is disastrous!

Even more worse is you forgetting the answer you knew best. All this can happen as a direct result of losing sleep. By the way, start your exam by writing the answer you know rather than waste time thinking on the question to which the answer doesn’t come easily to mind.

The fifth thought is about efficient time management. Why is this important? Due to procrastination and postponing, many students find exams staring at them at the end of term or semester or year without them being prepared for it. Learn to plan your time using a time table. Stick to it in spite of unexpected interruptions. And when you start writing your exam first have a quick glance at the entire question paper whenever that is possible. That will give you a fair idea how to utilize given time wisely. And leave five minutes at the end of writing your exam to cross check whether you have written all the answers.

Sixthly, one of the best ways to learn is to teach. Try to teach your friends the subject most difficult for you to learn. You’ll find it surprising how fast you learn and retain what you’ve picked up. Now with online options it is easy for you to interact with friends in a combined study context; isn’t it? When you teach, you master your subject much faster than when you just try to study it for yourself.

Finally, in spite of all that you do well, it is quite possible to lose marks. Take it as part of the game. Do not allow negative thoughts to dominate your mind. If you had done your best be happy. You will have your reward.

Do not go down under criticism. You look ahead in spite of mistakes made. Think about your God-given dreams. A simple way to manage time is to allot a chunk of time for a particular task you are attempting. That will compel you to plan how to use that time. The threat today to proper time management is our own slavish mentality towards mobile screens. It is a great stealer of time. Life is made of 4 F’s. These 4 F’s make life what it is: They are Faith, Family, Finance, and Friends.

The first F is Faith. Without faith in God it is impossible to find meaning in life. Of course, there are people who claim not to believe in God. I respect their freedom to do so. But life on earth is no accident. Therefore it has a purpose. And faith in God can help you realize that purpose.

The second F is Family. All of us are born into a family. Of course there are many who are less fortunate and are orphaned early in life. Now the divinely ordained instiution of family has undergone many changes in the last few decades. Yet in spite of all that has changed, the family is where we learn the first lessons of being loved and cared for.

The third F is Finance. Money is not everything in life. Yet money is needed for meeting the basic necessities of life. Therefore one has to learn to earn money through honest hard work. One has to learn to be wise and prudent in spending and investing money. Greed can make you blind to the more important values in life and can make you lose compassion to others.

The fourth F is Friends. There is a wider circle than our immediate family that makes an impact in our lives. Even though it includes many, there are few who stand with us in all our needs and moments of difficulty. They are your friends. There might not be many, but only few who will have your best interest in mind. Value and cherish them.

So let me conclude. The four F’s that make life what it is are: Faith, Family, Finance, and Friends. Faith in God, love in the family, faithfulness with one’s finances, and fun with friends are what makes life what it is.

Teach your children how to make an attempt at inter-disciplinary learning early in life by showing them analogies from other branches of study.

The third step to make studies interesting for children is to help them understand the importance and habit of preparing summary notes from the texts they learn from. The notes can include their own version of shorthand, symbolic representations, tree diagrams, flow charts and so on. Along with that they should be taught how to effectively retrieve information from these notes taken. This resource can be time-saving as well as enable scoring of high marks in examinations.

The last step and perhaps the most important step is to never compare your child with anyone else. Not even their siblings. This is absolutely negative, destructive and of no use. Give allowances for mistakes and failures. And keep on affirming that you believe in your children and that they will come up in life with flying colours.
