Bishop Jesudasan

LMS (London Missionary Society | Later name changed to Council for World Mission)  ദ്വിശതാബ്ദി “സ്വപ്നം കാണാൻ തുനിയുക” (Dare to Dream) എന്ന ആശയത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി  ലണ്ടനിൽ 1995-ൽ ആഘോഷിച്ച അവസരത്തിൽ, ഒരു പ്രത്യേക യോഗത്തിൽ പ്രസംഗിക്കാൻ മൂന്ന് പേർക്ക് മാത്രമേ അവസരം ലഭിച്ചുള്ളൂ എന്ന് തിരുമേനി പറഞ്ഞത്.

Bejoy Peter delivering sermon on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Bishop Jesudasan at St. Luke CSI Church

Excellence in Servant Leadership

“ക്രിസ്തുവിനായി ഞങ്ങൾ മൂഢന്മാരാകുന്നു” (“We are fools for Christ” | 1 കൊരിന്ത്യർ 4:10) എന്ന വിശുദ്ധ പൗലോസിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ധൈര്യം കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.

Excellence in Democratic Leadership

അങ്ങനെ ഇടപെടാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചവർ “Now the Bishop is speaking,” എന്ന വാക്കു കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ യഥാർത്ഥ നേതൃത്വത്തെ തിരിച്ചറിയുകയും ശാന്തരാകുകയും ചെയ്‌തിരുന്നു.

“Are you permanent? Am I permanent? None of us is permanent.”

Excellence in Professional Leadership

Excellence in Community Leadership

Excellence in Ecumenical Leadership

Excellence in Spiritual Leadership

Excellence in Cross-centred Theological Leadership

Excellence in The Voice of Leadership

Excellence in Leadership in Team Building

Excellence in Leadership in Modelling Self-Introspection

Excellence in His Leadership Legacy

Are You Unhappy at Work?

Smiling Woman Computer

There is every chance that the title resonated with the pain in your heart; isn’t it? Many people are unhappy at work. Why is it so? There are no easy answers. But let us try to know what can be the reasons and perhaps how to try to get the better of them.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

One, probably your immediate boss is your primary problem.

Always finding fault, always pressurizing you to meet deadlines, perhaps shouting at you occasionally might best describe this person. These are negatives, no doubt about that. At the same time, try to see all this as helping to push you beyond your limits to be the best you can be. This change of perspective can take the focus away from the negative boss to the positive process of growth that is happening for good.

Secondly, your passion might be somewhere else and your heart is there.

There are compromises we all make to meet current realities related to meeting our personal and family needs. No need to become frustrated about that. You need to wait patiently till the pressure of current needs are met and then you can think of switching to a new career or try to talk with your management to help you be in a role that bests suits your talent and passion.

Thirdly, it can be a toxic work environment, a bad work culture, or even your nosey colleagues that can be the problem.

There are no easy answers here. But for the sake of argument, let me say that you will always meet people who create trouble everywhere you go. Learn to avoid being with people who are potential volcanoes waiting to erupt. When they try to pry into your personal lives; don’t fly off the handle but instead with a gentle smile try to steer the topic away to something that is currently in the news. Not easy, but definitely doable.

Fourthly, it can be that you are too focused on the pay packet.

It can be less compared to others like you in other Companies or someone junior to you has been hired with a greater salary than yours. Both are hard to digest. One way to see your job is to see the big picture. If you can find meaning in your work because of the impact and influence it has on people it can make your burden light. Monetary rewards will come when you excel. Focus on excelling in your work even if your salary is not unto expectations at this time.

Fifthly, it can easily be a problem with work-life balance.

Personal and family needs and dull daily routines can take away your happiness at work. But life is real and not a fantasy. Problems are real and can lay their weight heavily on your mind. Try to see if some chores can be delegated. Try better prioritization of tasks and time management. Try talking with your friends. Take some deliberate time for yourself each day and spend it on your hobby. See, most people never ever get started on what they wish to get done in life. Get started now. Even if it is 5 minutes a day.

Sixthly, probably you are carrying someone else’s monkey on your back.

This concept was originally proposed by William Oncken Jr. in a Harvard Business Review article way back in 1974. It is a powerful image pointing to a daily reality at work. You might be saying yes to requests for help coming from others. There is nothing wrong with helping others. But consider whether they are just putting their monkey on your back and taking life easy. You should learn to help without carrying the burden. A gentle, firm, honest No to not-so-genuine requests can make life happier for you at work.

Finally, let me conclude by pointing out something we are all guilty of. Lack of gratitude.

So many of us take things for granted in life. Our loved ones, a home, a job, means of travel, good health etc., are some of the things that we don’t think much about. See, there is much in life we can be thankful to God for. An attitude of thanks and praise to God is a sure way to bring back joy and happiness in your work and keep the hope of a better tomorrow alive.

Put Off Your Old Attitudes and Put On New Attitudes

Attitudes influence our behaviour. It cements our character. And it can determine our ultimate destiny too. Therefore you need to learn to put off old attitudes and put on new attitudes.

Anything negative, anything dealing with darkness and evil, anything that is self-defeating, anything that is shameful; all come under old attitudes. But whatever is of the light, whatever is positive and creative, whatever builds you up and does not tear you down comes under the colourful umbrella of new attitudes.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Looking at life, we find negativity everywhere. No doubt, we are influenced by how those close to us look at life. Some of their old attitudes do create dents in our life and we too follow their thinking patterns and even the way they speak.

But life can be approached on another plane too. It is an invitation to rise up and fly high in the skies. Instead of the drag of negativity of old attitudes; you find lift in the positivity of new attitudes.

Without doubt, this freedom and joy of new living is God-initiated to those who choose to have it that way. But to continue in that attitude of positivity; you need to be watchful and you need to be in an attitude of constant improvement. If you neglect your part of the deal; if you become slack; if you become lazy; then like weeds overrunning a neglected garden; so will negative attitudes make a rush in. So be alert.

On the other hand, by welcoming change, by making efforts to conquer bad habits, by mingling with friends who demand that you be at your best; new attitudes do take hold of you. Then you can take off old attitudes; discard them, and put on new attitudes like you put on new clothes. It requires a renewing of the mind.

Yes, the mind is where the battlefied is. Your mind is often taken a prisoner in battle. And you think, speak, and do, what you don’t like. When you find that happening, intensify your efforts to seek after the good, the lovable, the excellent, and whatever spurs you on to have new attitudes that spell life, and joy and the radiance of shining light.

World Records Are My Favorite Food: Featuring Sydney McLaughlin

Sydney McLaughlin Mascot

At the World Athletic Championships Oregon 2022, the mascot, Legend the Bigfoot, photo bombed Sydney McLaughlin while holding a sign saying: “World records are my favorite food.” She had won with an incredible time of 50.68 seconds in the 400 metres hurdles which people have compared to the legendary Usain Bolt’s World record of 9.58 in the 100 metres. McLaughlin had earlier said during her Tokyo record-breaking olympic win in 2021 that:  “What I have in Christ is far greater than what I have or don’t have in life.”

Gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin: ‘What I have in Christ is far greater’ than anything else

Having said that let me just sketch how records are born.

Records as favourite food don’t happen without hard work, sacrificing a lot, avoiding distractions, a coach’s help, and training till you think you can do no further.

Records as favourite food do happen when you focus on giving your best, aspiring to better your performance, and looking forward with eagerness to face the fiercest competitors you have in the field.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Records come and go, and you create a legacy by breaking records and making new ones. But when you see them in the perspective of eternity; such glories are for the moment and they will fade away with time. There are things that matter most and that is what Sydney McLaughline referred to; having a personal relationship with Jesus and knowing him as Saviour and Lord.

It makes sense when one sees life as a race and your goal is to finish well.  For that matter, how many world record holders do you remember from former years? Very few; is it not? That’s all about earthly fame and glory. But earning praise from God at the end of your life’s race is to get a crown that will not perish, spoil or fade. So do not run aimlessly, but run so as to win the prize.

A Champion’s Mindset: Raise Your Game to Highest Performance

Tailpiece: When 400m hurdles for the first time was introduced in the Olympics at Los Angeles in 1984, the Malayali P. T. Usha from Kerala, India, known also as the “Payyoli Express,” lost the bronze medal by 1/100th of a second. It was a race which all Indians remember for that heart-break. In that race the runner who came first was Nawal El Moutawakel from Morocco and she had won gold after clocking 55.42 in that race. 38 years later Sydney McLaughlin’s time is 4.74 seconds better.

When Angels Compere: 7 Golden Tips for Compering

I. Write a compere script.

When angels compere, first and foremost, they compere only according to script. For angels deliver God’s message given them.

So also when you compere, your confidence will be high if you have scripted all that you plan to say.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

II. Smile from your heart.

When angels compere, they communicate joy. I don’t know whether angels smile; but Jesus said about the little ones that “their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” So when children smile; it should be making angels smile too as there is always joy in heaven.

And when you compere, the best thing you can bring on stage is your smile. If you smile from your heart; it creates a joyous mood and anticipation in the audience.

III. Vary your voice and style.

When angels compere, they vary their style to suit their message. When they warn; they have a solemn tone communicating urgency. When they sound hope; their voice is one of comfort and strength.

The lesson is that you have to match your voice and style to suit the mood and occasion. You might invite, celebrate, thank, or simply communicate information. You cannot use the same style for all.

IV. Build rapport with the audience and put them at ease.

When angels compere, they put the audience at ease. Often they are seen and heard saying, “Do not be afraid.”

As a compere you should be able to build a rapport with the audience. Some insightful remark or a timely word that can address the dominant mood of the audience can be a great move.

V. Focus spotlight on others and highlight them.

When angels compere, they simply do whatever duties they have been assigned to. They are flames of fire and servants of God worshipping him. They do not call attention to themselves but to the message and to God who sent them.

As a compere, your role is not to be in the limelight but help the audience to focus on the person being celebrated. You are to be like a voice drawing attention to others.

VI. Create memories; not just compere speeches.

When angels compere, there is a flash of heaven meeting the earth for a brief moment in time. As a compere if you can create some precious memories; that will remain in hearts and minds for long.

In that sense, the world has ever since found hope in these words of the angel on Bethlehem’s first Christmas carolling night: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord.”

So, with angels, let us also respond saying, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo.”

VII. Be committed to excellence.

When angels compere, they do it with excellence. When they worship God saying “Holy, Holy, Holy,” or while responding to the summons of God their words and actions are enthusiastic. In other words, you’ll never see an angel perform below his best.

So being an emcee or compere is a commitment to excellence. It is an art that is mastered over time. Attention to detail and a burning desire to perform well will help you excel as a compere.

A Loving Tribute to Prof. James M. Stewart

“What is it, Peter?” I said, “Nothing Sir.” But Prof. James M. Stewart persisted with the question. He had earlier asked our class, “Where have you heard of Venus before?” I had then whispered to my friends, “Circus.” And it had not escaped to catch his attention.

And as Prof. J. M. Stewart quizzed my friends, they blurted out, “Circus! Venus Circus!” (referring to the famous touring circus company). And then, breaking eye contact with me, and turning to the whole class, he made this classic remark: “See, how different people have different tastes according to their profession!” His ability to improvise on all occasions with his silver tongue was profoundly amazing.

Later when I started my public speaking training program in the year 1996–a year after I passed out from Mar Ivanios College–I vividly remember that I took the first copy of my program’s brochure to our beloved teacher, Prof. James M. Stewart, so lovingly known as “Stewart Sir.” With the kind of respect he has in my heart, I couldn’t think of anyone else to share about my venture first. I write this with a great sense of loss at his passing away yesterday on 21st May 2021. He had exhibited great affection, love and care towards me as he had a close-knit brotherly bonding with my late Daddy.

When I first told Stewart Sir of my interest to pursue English Literature, he encouraged me a lot to do so. And my life was scripted through a road that was less travelled by in later years, through the study of English Literature and various leadership and performance opportunities I got at Mar Ivanios College to excel in public speaking. Stewart Sir was always there to encourage me in my efforts in this direction.

JMS was how his name was written in short form. Those three letters together struck a note of respect always. There are so many varied aspects of his character that made his personality stand out. I would like to highlight just three of them.

First of all, he was a gifted orator. He spoke with great command in both English and Malayalam. His speeches are remembered by all who heard them. There was no thundering rhetoric but logic working its way through with gentle persuasion. There are two moments I recall. One, after one of his sermons at our church (we both attended the same church), I went and asked him, “Sir, when will I be able to deliver a speech like the one you just did?” I was fascinated by his ability to hold a twenty-minute sermon on one single point, having all of the listeners engaged in his oration.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

On another occasion, after I had given a sermon on Jesus the Good Shepherd, I just walked up to him to listen to his invaluable feedback. He put an arm around my shoulder and said, “My son, you could have left out the second and third points.” I learned the value of ruthless editing from him. When he mercilessly struck off many of my creative writing efforts with his turquoise blue ink, I realised how his thoughtful editing made my writing powerful. Further, no one can forget the kind of stage presence he had; how he could grace an occasion with dignity; and the felicity of words with which he could make even an ordinary occasion look grand.

Secondly, he was a gifted teacher par excellence. He took his time to get through a passage, be it poem, prose, or drama. He brought to life each word, scene, and character with his ability to dramatize without making us conscious of him doing so. Perhaps his greatest ability as a teacher was how he could connect the text being taught with real life examples, to people, and to life’s varied situations. He once quoted, “Experience is the comb you get when your head becomes bald.” and it took a lot of time for us to value its wisdom.

Life had taught him many lessons, he used to say, and he took them in his stride even when they took him through grief and loss. One of the things he took pride in was that he was teaching Literature. He used to say, “In Science, you learn about life; in Literature you learn life.” I have heard a professor (who is now no more; also, a former student of Stewart Sir) who stood with us in front of a class room and said, “Stewart Sir is yet to complete a few lessons for us.” He said that with a touch of humour; but it also says how much his students loved his sessions. Perhaps it is true, “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.”

Thirdly, he commanded awesome love, respect, and admiration from all his students. He was strict and there was no doubt about it. And even his firm look was sufficient enough to make students who were simply wasting their time scurry away from in front of the Department of English. His voice carried the command of a War General.

At the same time, he could understand students like no one else usually did. Even with the most violent guys in the college, he had a way to soothe them by putting his hand around their shoulders and asking gently, “What’s troubling you?” He alone would walk into the midst of a brawl and simply with his words would push two warring factions of students away from each other. I’ve witnessed this myself with great disbelief at times. Students would walk up to him and pour out their hearts to him, vent their troubles in family or life. And in him they found someone who genuinely cared. We have heard many life lessons that he had to share from such conversations.

Some time ago, I was able to visit him at his home and spent some time with him conversing. Even when he had difficulty remembering everything; still he was able to recall many moments and asked questions about them. Unable to see when I met him last, he said he was spending much time listening.

Maybe I cannot close without mentioning one fact: in the early days of my blogging, he used to send me encouraging comments after reading some of the posts. A man of his stature finding time to read and comment on one of his students’ writing tells volumes of the mettle of his character; doesn’t it?

Department English Mar Ivanios College

And now leaving aside all else I could say of him, like the relationship he maintained with Bishops and clergy across Christian denominations, politicians, administrators, and former students; his tremendous gift of organizing mega events, his skill with the written word, his contributions as an Editor and many things more; I would like to close by saying that as a teacher he inspired, motivated, and set standards of excellence that is difficult to emulate. But the light he was able to ignite in the hearts of many, the love he had for all of us students, the great aspirations he had for us; will always be cherished.

There are many more things to say. But as he often said, “When the heart is full; words are few.”

Three Magic Words Graduation Speech @ College of Nursing

Respected dignitaries on the dais, beloved colleagues, and graduating students,

Have you wondered how it feels when you’re aboard a ship going on a long voyage for the first time? What is the feel when the ship moves away from shore? You slowly lose sight of your loved ones and all familiar landmarks. Then it is all water everywhere.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

But then what sustains you there? Hope! Hope of fulfilling your dreams, hope of a better tomorrow, and hope of a great journey ahead. My dear graduates and post graduates College of Nursing, you are soon going to be part of this situation I have just described. Life, my dear friends, is forward. There comes moments when we have to step out into the unknown and unmapped territories.

Let me briefly spell out three magic words that can light up your path ahead:

The first magic word I would like to shout out loud to you is the word LIFE.

We live in a world which is increasingly becoming hostile to life. The dignity of life is challenged everywhere. People are being reduced to labels, numbers, and even objects. It is in this context that we Nurses are called to nurture life, value life, cherish life, and bring health and healing to the world.

Have you understood the real impact of this? There was once a man, a common labourer in Europe who said, “I am building here a cathedral with the great Architect Sir Christopher Wren.” See, that person had the insight that though his role was to bring together the bricks and build the wall; he was engaged in a larger task of helping people worship God in a beautiful cathedral. He also had the sense of pride and dignity that he was working along with a great builder of cathedrals.

My dear Nursing graduates, you too are working along side our Creator God. He is in the business of giving life; and you along side with him are also engaged in helping people maintain healthy lives. Be thankful that God has entrusted you with this awesome privilige.

In this context let me remind you those beautiful lines from Michael Jackson,

Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me.

The second magic word I would like to leave with you is PURPOSE.

In that classic movie Chariots of Fire which shows the Olympic Gold winning effort of Eric Liddel, there is a moment where he speaks his heart out to his sister Jennie. He says, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast! And when I run I feel his pleasure.”

Likewise you all are called to be nurses with a purpose—the purpose to care, to give hope, and to put confidence in people. This is a high calling in life. To fulifil that call, you may have to make personal sacrifices.

Lini Puthussery is one among us in Kerala who with great courage and dignity made a great sacrifice to take care of people infected with the Nipah Virus. She could have played it safe. But she chose to pursue the call of duty. Florence Nightingale could have played it safe duringthe Crimean war but she was ready to be used as an instrument of healing in God’s hands. Or take the example of Edith Cavell, a British nurse who was executed by the Germans for saving the lives of many soldiers during World War I. She was quoted as saying, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved.”

So my dear graduating students, you are on a mission with a purpose–the purpose to care, to give hope, and to put confidence in people while nursing them back to good health.

The third magic word I would like to bring to your attention is COMPASSION.

We live in the age of ever-happening technology. What is the impact of this? Many husbands know their mobile phones better than their wives and vice versa. With artificial intelligence making great progress; today life is becoming more and more mechanical and robotic. Lost is the time of family prayer and dinner together. We have also let go of simple conversations at home. Everybody is busy chatting with everyone else in the world but not with members of family.

As Mother Theresa noted, “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.”

So know that most people who come into your care are poor. They may have houses, cars, jobs, and plenty of gold but they are emotionally and spiritually poor. What they need is compassion. One of the characteristics of Jesus during his earthly ministry was that he stopped to listen to the cry of individuals because he was moved with compassion.
Can you be a channel of God’s compassion? If yes, a healing beyond that of physical sicknesses can take place. That is a greater miracle.

Let me conclude. I would like to thank all of you for inviting me to deliver this graduation address. I am deeply thankful for the kind words of introduction too.

My dear graduating students you are now going to be angels of encouragement and hope. You are going to be carrying the light of hope in jars of clay. In yourselves you may feel weak and inadequate for the great task ahead. But let me wish and pray that God Almighty hold you by your right hand and lead you on your journey ahead.

What Better Hope in Life Do You Have Than This?

Remember the three magic words.
Life
Purpose
Compassion.

God bless you all.
Thank you.

A Note of Appreciation to All Teachers with Love and Utmost Respect

Who has not been inspired by a teacher? Somewhere at the back of our minds stands at least one or two who showed us light and pointed out to us the path we need to travel. It is deeply appreciated from all of us. You deserve and have our utmost respect dear teachers.

On this occasion of Teacher’s Day, let me spell out who a teacher really is. A teacher is one who has a heart of love, a passion for knowledge, and a skill for communicating the same.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

A teacher is a balanced mix of discipline and gentleness at the same time. He or she is one who is a role model by setting an example for the students in speech, action, discipline, and character.

He or she, on rare occasions when something goes wrong, is humble enough and honest enough to admit, “Sorry, I made a mistake.”

A teacher is one who has the ability to spot the hidden potential in a child and encourage the child to live true to the dreams in his or her heart.

A huge gallery of famous personalities owe it to their teachers for having first identified their talent and are thankful to them for having nurtured it. The story of Helen Keller and how her teacher Anne Sullivan had influenced her is a timeless inspiration to all; isn’t it?

A teacher believes in a child even when others label him or her negatively and will not neglect a student because others have given up on that student saying that the student is not good in studies.

Many students have found the courage to hope and the dare to dream just because of one teacher who said, “Yes, you can!”

A teacher is one who is not satisfied with the knowledge of the past; but is always updated on what is new in his or her subject. He or she makes an extra effort to bring something new that is interesting, informative, inspiring, and even inter-disciplinary to class each day.

This extra effort is a thing of joy for the teacher and extremely satisfying as the class responds enthusiastically and attentively.

A teacher is one who listens carefully and attentively to what students tell him or her. In other words, when students find in a teacher a caring heart, they trust the teacher with even personal and intimate matters of the heart that they cannot share with even their best friend.

Above all these things, a teacher inspires. One timely word of appreciation from a teacher can ignite a spark and a fire in the lives of students.

Thus a teacher shining a small burning light even in a remote village might be igniting a fire in the life of a brilliant student who will carry that to the ends of the earth one day!

“I sing the praise of the Unknown Teacher,” wrote Henry Van Dyke, himself a teacher. “Great Generals win campaigns, but it is the unknown soldier who wins the war. Famous educators plan new systems of pedagogy, but it is the unknown teacher who delivers and guides the young. He lives in obscurity and contends with hardship. For him no trumpets blare, no chariots wait, no golden decorations are decreed.

“He keeps the watch along the borders of darkness and makes the attack on the trenches of ignorance and folly. Patient in his daily duty, he strives to conquer the evil powers which are the enemies of youth. He awakens sleeping spirits. He quickens and communicates his own joy in learning and shares with boys and girls the best treasures of his mind. He lights many candles which, in later years, will shine back to cheer him. This is his reward.” Source: https://repository.mainlib.upd.edu.ph/omekas/files/original/9e107c3a86ea8311c4812b044874b9d140684fcb.pdf

Four Sure Ways You Can Earn Respect from Others

Many demand respect but sadly it cannot be commanded. On the other hand, respect is hard-earned. In this short speech let me highlight four ways you can earn respect from others.

First of all, you can earn respect with your behaviour. Let it be courteous. Treat others with the same kindness you expect them to show to you. Carry yourself with dignity and never be frivolous in good company. Remain humble and do not try to blow your own trumpet even when you have many ahcievements to your credit. Then people will respect you.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Secondly you can earn respect with your expertize. Be extremely good at something. It can be your academics, work, or hobby or something else you are passionate about. When people see your skill and the ease with which you get things done, they’ll naturally respect you.

Thirdly you can earn respect through your communication skills especially through the way you speak. Speech reveals the stuff and character you are made of. A gentle tongue can break a bone1 says the Bible. You might need to be persuasive and you might have to command at times, but when tempered with gentleness it cannot fail to earn respect from others.

Avoid diminishing people in front of others. Do not make fun of them or mock them. But with your conversation build them up in having a better sense of their worth and esteem.

Another important way you can earn respect is by your attitude. Being cool under pressure is something that marks out great captains in cricket. Being able to inspire others even when you are tested and under pressure is excellent attitude. St. Paul had this to say of this kind of attitude:

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”2

Being able to rise up after many defeats and face the giants in one’s life with unflagging enthusiasm and a spirit of dogged determination to fight to the very last makes people respect you.

So these are the four ways through which you can earn respect: by your behaviour, your expertize, your communication skills and your attitude. The list is not exhaustive but it is definitely a starting point from which you can start to earn respect from others.

Of All the Lessons You’ve Taught Me: Finish Strong!

Of all the lessons you’ve taught me,
There is one that has remained
My favourite:
Finish strong!

Life is full of beginnings,
Second chances,
And starting all over again
To pursue your goal.

In all this,
Keep your eyes on the finishing tape,
Never let your eyes wander,
But focus on the finishing line.

There is reward at the end,
Not for running along with others,
But for finishing well,
And finishing strong.

Therefore do not yield to despair,
Do not give up hope,
Even when the winds blow against,
And progress seems slow.

There are others who have finished
The race ahead of you.
They are cheering you like a cloud of witnesses
From all around.

Look at their faith,
Learn from their perseverance,
They finished strong in spite of troubles and trials;
For they endured the race,
Looking steadily at the Invisible One,
The Rewarder of those who finish strong!

Can You Make a Bolt for the Finish Line with Bricks on Your Head?

Running Race

You might be the fastest sprinter in the world. Yet you won’t think of or ever imagine to run a 100 metres sprint at the Olympics or World Athletic championship finals with bricks on your head; will you?

But the sad thing is that in real life you are probably attempting to run life’s race and rush ahead with many bricks on your head. And what are these bricks? They are dead weights that slow down your progress.

And what are these dead weights?

The first one is definitely the baggage of your past. Your past might be full of mistakes you made and plenty of regrets you have. But they are to be left behind. Let the lessons you learned from them remain. Let those teach you humility. But never entertain the past and its baggage with the same dignity given to  a foreign head of state paying an official visit to the country. So, leave your past behind.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

The second dead weight is definitely negative habits you entertain. You might have struggled with them for years. You might have pledged to stop indulging in them many times. And especially every new year you might have taken the resolution to get out of that habit or habits pulling you down. But you might not have succeeded. Perhaps you need to be reminded that sometimes your resolve is not enough. Therefore, seek God’s help.

The third dead weight you carry is, worries of this life. Each day the news is getting bad and worse. There is not one day without some kind of negativity being heard. In spite of all the entertainment going on, bad news still makes its rounds. And you are worried. Especially about what the future is going to be. The only antidote to worry is trust in God.

Now what can you do about these three: baggage from your past, negative habits from your present and worries about your future?

The main thing is to renew your mind: Think on the finishing tape. Think of things that matters at the end. Refuse to worry. Say no to negative habits. And seek God’s help to wipe your past clean and give you a brand new beginning in life.

Life is a race. And you’ve to learn to discipline yourself and go into strict training to keep yourself ready for your best performance in the race. Those who run well avoid distractions and focus on the finishing tape. They throw away all bricks that weigh them down and run.

So many runners in the Olympics in its earliest form ran to win a wreath or a laurel that faded away. But God rewards for an eternity with a crown that does not perish, spoil or fade away. So be careful how you run life’s race. Run so as to win the prize. There is going to be rewards and joy at the end of the race if you do away with the bricks you are carrying today.

7 Must-Haves to Build a World Class Culture in Your Organization

Bejoy Peter Performance Coach Mettle Networks

It is an Organization’s unique approach to work that helps shape its culture. Building a world class culture in an Organization is like growing a tree. It will take time to send its roots deep. But once it takes hold it is firm.

Here are the seven must-haves that builds a great culture in any Organization:

Discipline

A positive and vibrant culture happens only with discipline. This discipline is not imposed by rules and regulations, do’s and don’ts. This discipline is self-imposed and not enforced by force and supervision. Instead it is delivered by people who have a passion about their work and a commitment to see their work contribute to the greatness of the brand for which they work for.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Leadership

Culture does not work upwards from the rank and file of an Organization. Instead it is largely determined by the leadership. It begins with a leader’s vision and values. It gathers momentum by the enthusiasm shown by the leader in creating an ambience within the Organization that is in tune with his stated purpose of the Organization’s long-term goals, strategies, career paths for employees and of course people policies. When members of the team align themselves to this; there is rapid growth and progress.

Pride and Meaning

To have a great culture, people in an Organization need to feel meaning in their work. Most of them do not care about the big picture. But they do need to be assured that their role and the work they do makes a significant contribution to the Organization. Only then will they have pride in the Organization they work for. The bottom line is that motivation to embrace culture does not depend entirely on the money one earns; but it depends more on knowing that one’s work is valued.

Freedom, Autonomy, and Responsibility

We all love freedom. And what most people hate is working for bosses who are generally not positively spoken of. An Organization which can give freedom to its employees to work can create a culture which is totally different from an Organization which functions under autocratic hierarchical structures.

Freedom does not mean that employees work randomly and totally at their will and pleasure even if it is work from home. No.

There are expected deliverables against deadlines even when work is done as self-managed teams. Leadership roles change within teams as and when required. The sense of ownership and the way members of team take up responsibility is immense when working like this.

Communication

How do you feel when the Organization keeps you knowledgeable about its progress? How do you feel when they call you for an All-Hands meet and share with you the joy of having accomplished one of your big goals? How do you feel when they inform you truthfully about reversals of fortunes and honestly tell you about some cost-cutting measures that has to be taken? The impact of communication which is clear, direct and purposeful is enormous as far as culture is concerned.

Ideas that boost brand image has to be repeatedly communicated to all within the Organization in creative ways. It will infuse members of the team with confidence and pride.

The “We” feel

Celebrations and coming together are not a waste of money. Instead it creates culture. It creates an immense and invaluable memory bank of good times together. What bonds families is the time they spent together. In the same way, Organizations which create avenues for meaningful get-together is building a rock-solid foundation for retaining their best work force in the best of good will and loyalty.

Purpose

If you want me to single out one word or concept which contributes to great culture, I can answer in one word. That is purpose. It is an understanding of purpose that gives an Organization the reason for its existence. It is an earnest belief in purpose that helps an Organization endure difficult times and come through crises stronger and vibrant than ever before.

It is purpose that determines what business to do and what not to pursue. It is purpose that enables employees to avoid distractions and focus on what is meaningful and absolutely essential. In fact, Organizations thrive when purpose permeates their thinking, attitudes, communication, habits and action.

Let me conclude, whether it is consciously understood or not, every Organization has got a culture. It becomes “Good to Great” when its impact is felt positively and purposefully by all who come in touch with it.

7 Compelling Steps to Achieve Excellence at the Workplace!

Welcome Display Mettle Networks

Some work to make a living. Others work because they are passionate. The first kind of people do things well. The second kind of people pursue excellence at the workplace!

It does not take long for anyone to find out that those who pursue excellence are few. Why is this so? What makes them a rare breed? Let’s find out:

Enjoyment

Those who pursue excellence always enjoy their work. No one has to coax them to go to work. They are eager and enthusiastic about what they do. They do not allow routines to dull their senses to the excitement of a new day and opportunities it presents.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Pride

Those who pursue excellence take pride in their work. They always keep the big picture in mind. This helps them to maintain perspective even when going ahead is not smooth. The knowledge that what they do is significant to the success of the Organization gives them immense drive.

Learning

Those who pursue excellence are constant learners. They do not wait for people to teach them. If they realize that there is a gap in their knowledge level which prevents them doing their best in performing their task, they make it a priority to learn and update themselves. They do not make a distinction about who they are learning from.

Initiative

Those who pursue excellence are ready to take initiative to solve problems If they sense that the team requires their additional help somewhere they volunteer to help. This not only solves the problem but also pumps adrenaline into the rest of the team.

Work Hard

Those who pursue excellence work hard. They are committed to their goals. They are always willing to go the extra mile multiple times. Spending longer hours at work is not at all considered a burden. They do not wait for someone to egg them on. Without fanfare they surpass and do more than what is expected of them.

Credit

Those who pursue excellence do not bother who gets the credit. They are balanced persons knowing their own strengths and not longing for emotional pats on their back. Their focus is always on getting the job done as perfectly as possible and never on how many medals they’ve showcased for themselves in the process. In one word, these people are not at all insecure at the workplace.

Change

Those who pursue excellence constantly assess what kind of changes they need to make to keep themselves sharp and polished. Sometimes, some projects do not take off as expected and some are shelved. Sometimes the market changes so fast that one has to quickly package products and services differently. This calls for courage to change and these people embrace change.

Self-Doubt Can Be Overcome to Make You a Winner

Self-doubt can defeat you.

How can you tackle self-doubt? Let us look at seven steps to do so:

Look at the worst that can happen. You might fail. So what? At least your fear of failure will be removed; isn’t it?

Look at your best performance in the past. If you could do it then, you can certainly repeat that again; can’t you?

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Look at all those who are eagerly waiting for you to do your part. Maybe it is your speech, your song, or your batting. Whatever it be they are all looking forward to your success. Isn’t that encouraging?

Look at those closest to you: Your parents, brothers and sisters, teachers, friends, Coach etc. They are people who believe the best about you. They know you can.

Look at the opposition. If they are strong it should bring out the fighting spirit in you. Therefore do not yield to a spirit of despair. You can conquer your doubts and win.

Look to yourself. You are unique; isn’t it? Doubts are not a sign of lack of talent but it is usually nervousness playing its trick before a critical performance. So learn to master it. Self-doubt comes to those who are genuinely talented.

Finally look to God. He is a great encourager. He says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. I know you by name. You are mine. I have given you both skill and wisdom to perform the tasks I have called you to do. And I will never leave you nor forsake you. Therefore, be strong and courageous!”

Isn’t that awesome? And the knowledge that God is there to encourage and help is the greatest cure to self-doubt I have known!

Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

In Relentless Pursuit of Success

As many colours are there so also are there many lenses with which to view success. Each will show a different image; coloured by the way each person likes to see success:

Success!
It all starts with a desire to do something worthwhile. Most of us fail right here. Our focus is inward. Trying to receive; but reluctant to give. But blessed is the man who learns to give of his time, talent, treasure and knowledge to others.

Success!
It is one’s ability to stick to a purpose. You can call it constancy to purpose. The oft-quoted example is that of the postal stamp which sticks to the envelope and makes it to the destination.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Success!
It is one’s ability not to wait for seeds to sprout. You might have heard the historic legend of Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – February 18, 1845), who went around planting apple seeds across many states in U.S.A. and kept on travelling doing good.

He did not wait for the seeds to sprout. But knew that someday the good that he had planted would multiply when the seeds would sprout and grow and bear fruit. The point I am trying to make is, “He who conducts an orchestra must turn his back to the crowd.”

Success!
Is all about the quest for excellence. Sometime ago I read somewhere that “Michael Angelo painted with a brush in one hand and a candle in the other to prevent his shadow from covering his masterpiece in progress.” Such quest for excellence should inspire us to do better.

Success!
It’s all about keeping on moving while waiting. There is a saying by Thomas Alva Edison, “Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.” What does it mean? To hustle here means to move energetically and rapidly. But how to do it while waiting? that’s the question!

Well, lay the foundation of your dreams. Do something. Take even a small, insignificant step towards achieving your long-time goal. Don’t wait in despair when a door closes. Silently keep working.

You Can Find Success God’s Way

I Have Placed Before You an Open Door That No One Can Shut

For it is written “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” — Proverbs 22:29 Bible.

Without Perseverance No One Wins at the Olympics; Neither Can You Win in Life!

Olympics is one of the finest expressions of man’s passion to excel, dominate and win. On the other side, the agony and the pain of defeat after having come so close is the stuff that the legend of the Olympics is made of.  In this speech today, I would like to highlight perseverance as the key to the Olympic glory.

Failing is one thing; but failing without a true fight is something else. Do we lose the battle even before the game begins? Are victories made in the playing arena or is it worked out in one’s mind already? These are questions worthy of our highest consideration.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Under-achievers try desperately to find short cuts to avoid preparing for performance. But honest hard work is the only way in which preparation can be done. If you can do the unglamorous work of preparation in the shadows; then when the spotlights will focus on you, they’ll see the emergence of a champion like gold coming out purified in the fire!

Dear friends, there is no substitute, I say again, no substitute for “blood, toil, tears and sweat.” The Olympic glory is not a product of rocking away in easy chairs; but is the reward of those whose “faces are marred by dust and sweat and blood,” today.

So many have said this many times, but I am saying it again: “Rome was not built in a day.” Everybody says it feels great to win an Olympic gold. But how long have you to be at it to win? How many heartaches have you to endure?

With what courage will you bounce back from defeats? Will your enthusiasm hold good when all that you built up over the years crumble down into rubble and dust?

Keeping on going for medal gold even when you’re crushed in spirit, even when medal gold seems unattainable, even when detractors say that it is not possible to achieve, is the secret of winning! In one word, perseverance is the key!

Victories in life are not permanent. We find the Olympics throw up new champions every four years. We find the glory of the past achievers pale into insignificance with the arrival of new ones.

So what is the relevance of the Olympic glory? It should teach you and me that life’s most coveted moments might not perhaps be in the victory stands. The lasting legacy might not be the medal you won but the sterling example you leave behind of “how you played the game!”

Dear friends, the Olympic glory is not for the man who is chasing a few nice rabbits here and there when he is hunting a prized lion. He has to keep track of his one goal. He has to keep his eyes focussed. He should see nothing but his victory. He should be able to say No to passions of life and distractions that all others indulge in.

Life continues. The Olympic torch in its journey across oceans and continents represents this continuity. It tells us that a message is being passed on. of a positive message of excellence to the next generation.

Will the next generation remember you as one who fought well; no matter whether you won or lost? Let me conclude in the words of Napoleon Bonaparte, “Victory belongs to the most persevering!”

“Life Is About Passions”

Every achievement in life springs from a burning desire to succeed. It is this burning desire that helps you conquer fear and break out from inhibitions.

Another word for burning desire is passion. What can I compare passion to? It is like a forest fire. It rages wild and burns down everything in its path. Therefore try to fuel passion in life.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Now let me ask you, “Have you met someone with a real burning desire and passion in life?” One thing you cannot miss about such a person is his or her single-minded aim.

He or she is someone who has given up on lesser ambitions and focused sharply on getting one thing done in life. Such a person is a disciplined person who has chiseled away everything else in life that will not contribute to that one aim that has taken hold of his or her heart so powerfully.

Yet another important mark of a passionate person is the ability to utilize time wisely. He will make use of opportunities that come his way. A passionate man knows that time is a resource that is constantly running out and can never be replenished. So he will plan and prioritize and act accordingly.

Finally, know that promotions come to a person with passion. That is because a person with passion is someone who is faithful in the small things of life. Nothing is unimportant to such a person. Whatever he does, he does to the best of his ability and with all of his heart in it. Such a person cannot be stopped from being promoted.

As Jesus Christ said,

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”*

Yes, those who live life to the fullest are those who have a burning desire to succeed. Now the question is, “Do you have such a passion?”

* (Luke 16:10 Bible).

Don’t Call Yourself a Failure When All That Happened Was You Failed!

If you have not failed, that means probably you succeeded in everything you did or you did not attempt to do anything at all.

The chances are that you never tried. Now why is that so? Most likely you were afraid to try because you feared to make mistakes. But then you already made the big mistake of not attempting.

What is the fear that keeps you from not trying. Isn’t it the fear of failure? Yes, it is!

Blood Jesus Cleanse

What happens when you fail? The best thing that happens is that it shows you the stuff you are made of. Failures inspire you to do better next time, helps you learn from your mistakes and makes you desperate about winning. Failures can unmask your pretensions and show you your true character.

Failures also teach you humility. It teaches you that success is a process and not a destination. So there is no reality in classifying certain experiences of life as failures. What you probably call “failure” has done more to mould you into a person with strength of character than anything you achieved and termed as “success.”

So if you ask me, I prefer you to go and risk failure in something that you know to be good. The world may laugh at you. Let it do so.

But you go multiply your attempts. And when the nets come in empty after a long night’s hard work I hope and pray you will hear the voice of God saying “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch!”*

Life has thrown new challenges. In this context, as I look back at all my experience of teaching, I think there are three things every student should know. Let me share that with you.

First of all finding yourself where you are now was never your choosing.

When you were young it was your parents who decided things for you; perhaps they still do.

You might not like everything they do and might not agree with all that they decide for you. But there are no perfect parents on earth and yours are no exception. Learn to forgive in case they are wrong.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

At the same time do not give up when you find yourself in a course of study that was never your first choice.

Instead make best use of time and opportunities that are present for you. Do not compare yourself with others and feel inferior. Negative circumstances are just the right conditions for you to excel.

Who knows! If you show passion for the subject that you find yourself in today, your skill in it might just be the most wanted in the changed world tomorrow.

Students, 7 Steps to Overcome Your Fear of Exams!

Secondly, learn to do ordinary things exceptionally well.

Let me start from the simplest of examples. From drawing a margin in your notebook, writing today’s date on the blackboard when given the chance, tying your shoelace properly, are all indicators of greatness.

The point is excellence is a habit. And it starts with extraordinary attitude in what others neglect.

No task is below your dignity if you can stamp it with a divine “nothing left undone that could be done” attitude. Whatever you do, do it with enthusiasm and as if there is no second chance.

When such an attitude becomes a habit there are no end to possibilities. What is mundane and routine becomes ablaze with glory.

So then, aim high and keep on doing the ordinary with the best of your efforts every single time you attempt. Let there be no exceptions.

A Note of Appreciation to All Teachers with Love and Utmost Respect

My third thought is that you should arm yourself with hope.

Fear and worry, anxiety and despair, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can cloud your minds anytime. The future has become uncertain like never before.

Carefully laid plans are disrupted. There are more reasons beyond your control than what you can imagine.

Know that no man can promise you a bright future. Artificial intelligence will fail when predicting the future.

Yet let me remind you never to lose hope but look ahead to comebacks in life, have dreams, sing songs in blackest nights, be thankful, and rise above every setback that life can throw at you.

Hope is not found in endless waiting, but taking initiative and acting in faith when even silver linings are not seen in the clouds.
When you see waters flooding and overflowing the banks in your life, do not feel intimidated. But with trust in God step in. You will find a highway in the midst of the impossible.

So dearest of my students, in my retirement year it is a kind of farewell note that I have sounded. It is uncertain when we all will meet face to face.

Let change keep happening but let goodness and love, and true friendship remain. Thank you one and all.

A Successful Comeback Is Possible for You!

“You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.”1

Loss of confidence happens to all talented men and women in certain seasons of life.

When it happens the first thing to believe is that you can come out of it, God helping you.

Again, do not be surprised that you feel totally confused and unable to do so many things you did with ease in the past. That is how it is during a period of loss of confidence.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

What you need to do is to look back, look forward, and look up. What you shouldn’t do is look inward and feel helpless.

Instead, look back to your best past performances and believe that you can do it again. Perhaps much better than how you did it then.

Then you need to look forward and focus on dreaming big for your future. Do not focus on the present misery and limit yourself. The greater your dream the better chance for your quickness of recovery.

And when you dream, always think of helping people to be at their best through your success. It will give a greater purpose to your dreams and enthusiasm in your present efforts.

The next thing to do is to look up. God loves you and is always ready to help you. The only thing you need to know is that his sense of timing is different.

He is patient. He takes time to rebuild your confidence. His goal is formation of your character and making you have inner strength and courage.

Perhaps the hidden blessing in loss of confidence is that you become a person with compassion for others. Instead of being puffed up with pride because of your talent and abilities, you learn to stoop down and give a helping hand to those who struggle with lack of confidence themselves.

So cheer up. Your loss of confidence is not going to last long. With hope in God and trust in his unchanging love for you, move forward to climb greater heights than you have ever achieved so far.

7 Essential Stops to Leadership Power Leakage

Leadership is an intentional exercise. If you leave it to chance, the chances are that you will experience power leakage in leadership. Here are 7 areas you need to be conscious about.

#1. Getting over-familiar with people.
There is nothing wrong in building relationships and friendships with people who are under your leadership. But never forget the principle of distance. Leadership that allows people to get too close to you personally can disable you to function well when you need to correct, discipline and persuade them to take action.

#2. Being a caring person.
Caring for others is a good quality. But there is a conflict here with power in leadership. The more you seem to care for people, the more they tend to steal your valuable time. A need that can be met in five minutes might go into a prolonged discussion of personal needs and difficulties if you don’t exercise proper leadership. Be matter of fact in your listening, give to-the-point advice, delegate wherever possible, and instil hope. Do that in quick time and get back to your work of leading. Don’t be pulled into the trap of seeing only the need of one person when you are leading an entire team or organization.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

#3. Late intervention.
Leadership is best when there is anticipation of emerging situations. That calls for timely intervention. If as a leader you become a spectator watching others lead the show in a discussion, then there is power leakage. You have to show boldness to step in, take the lead, and control discussions. There will always be people who love to have the limelight, to show off how knowledgeable they are, and those who deliberately try to usurp leadership. Therefore you need to be alert to the fact that leadership is always open to competition and the seat you occupy is envied by many.

#4. Being surprised by information.
One of the mistakes leaders make is when they do not take care to get information from the grassroots. Do not depend on your immediate chain of command alone for critical information. Bypass them and have a secure reporting system in place. The worst thing that can happen in a discussion is when you have to ask, “What is the discussion all about?” It makes you look weak and uninformed. Having vital information with you is an absolute must for any leader.

#5. Not leading with questions.
A leader who exercises power and influence is one who knows to ask the right questions. This helps to question wrong assumptions people have about situations and problems confronting them. Asking the right questions can shake people out of complacency and make people commit themselves to deadlines and plan of action proposed. Questions can help to elicit critical information that might become vital in solving problems or taking negotiations forward. A leader is one who should have persuasive ability and that cannot be true without the ability to ask questions. A simple question like, “What would you have done in this situation?” can get the listener become creative  with his or her response.

#6. The Nero effect.
Nero was busy playing his fiddle when Rome was burning. Leaders who close their eyes to immediate needs and substitute them with other lesser pursuits, hobbies, or distractions fall into this category. Problems do not disappear on their own. They have to be tackled with diligence. St. Paul makes that point very clear when he wrote that if a person’s gift is leadership he should exercise it diligently1 which means that he should do it with careful and persistent work or effort. Yes, leadership should be approached as work to be done with a long-term vision and keeping long range goals in mind.

#7. Forgetting the killer instinct.
Leaders who forget the killer instinct are like athletes who relax when they see the finishing tape allowing others to edge them out. A leader should always be doing critical follow-up to ensure that nothing takes him or her by surprise. Whatever can be foreseen should be anticipated; and necessary measures taken to avoid surprises. A leader cannot take promises made at face value but should keep reminding people of their commitments often. It might seem annoying but that is part of the killer instinct. Get things done without fail. Don’t leave it to chance. That is the power of leadership in action.

“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.” – Peter F. Drucker

Inspirational Farewell Speech: I Now Stand Alone on the Deck of My Ship!

It is time to say goodbye. I have said it many times before. Yet it has never grown easy.

I now stand alone on the deck of my ship awaiting a new set of passengers.

I will wake up tomorrow with a heavy heart. I will miss you all.

Do not think that the sessions have come to an end. This is not an end but a beginning. What the caterpillar calls an end, the butterfly calls a beginning!

As a Trainer I cannot walk with you all the way. Like Rev. Martin Luther King said the night before he was assasinated, I may not cross with you over to the Promised Land. There is a place where I have to stop and you have to go on.

All of you have shown immense talent. At some point along our journey each one of you discovered who you truly are. You realized your true potential for the first time in your life.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Now it is time to use every opportunity that comes your way. You will certainly make mistakes. You will face criticism.

But remember three things.
One, aim for excellence.
Two, keep on doing what you are good at. Perseverance is the word for it but for ease of remembering let me say endurance.
Three, enjoy speaking.
These are the Three E’s I would like to leave you with:
Excellence!
Endurance!
Enjoyment!

I would like to thank each one of you for being part of this Batch. Each one of you contributed to the success of this class in your own unique way.

Thank you for the love, fun and friendship. I hope it will last for a long time to come. And thank you for the thoughtful gifts you gifted me with. It makes this parting even more difficult.

It is now time to say goodbye. I don’t promise that everyday I will be thinking of all of you. That is not possible. But at the back of my mind somewhere you will be there.

Let me end by asking why we go and watch sunsets even though they bring in darkness? It is because we are sure that the sun will rise again.

Some of you have already seen sunsets in life. This is my heartfelt prayer and wish for you: that each one of you will have a brilliant Sunrise in your life with better hopes, better dreams and better tomorrows. Thank you

Talent Minus Discipline Is Like a Jumbo Jet Without Its Wings

Talent is what God has gifted you with. You can hide it, neglect it, or use it.

Often we find many talented people unable to make it big in life. The reasons are many.

Talent alone will not take you places. As Stephen King has said: “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.”

Now what should you do with your talent?

First of all be thankful to God that you have been uniquely gifted. On the other hand if you become proud, someday there will be a fall. And like Humpty Dumpty after his fall, no one might be able to put you back together again.

Secondly, do something to improve your talent everyday–be it singing, drawing, speaking, writing or anything else. Doing something each day will take you nearer your goal.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Thirdly, be in touch with others who are talented. Find out how they succeeded. See, success is a habit and you can learn those habits that lead you to excellence.

Fourthly, discipline yourself. You need to take care of your health, your habits, your relationships, and how you spend your time. As H. Jackson Brown, Jr. has said, “Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backwards, or sideways.”

Fifthly, when you are focused on bringing others happiness through your talent your light shines out. Someday, God will demand an accounting of how you used your talent. Then you shall earn your reward for best utilization of your time, talent, and treasure.

Sixthly, some people never take an effort to use their talent. It is like digging a hole in the ground and burying it. Be sure that it will rust to its death and ruin there. What is the use of it, then?

Finally, talent without perseverance cannot succeed. There will come obstacles, rejection, criticism, and setbacks. There will come times when you will pass through loss of confidence and self-doubts. These are common to those who are uniquely gifted and talented. But it is your ability to hold on and move in spite of all these that will help you finish strong.

Let me conclude reminding you once again that talent is God’s gift to you. Don’t let it remain unopened, unused, and neglected. Instead, fan into flame1 or kindle afresh the gift of God that is in you.

1 2 Timothy 1:6 Bible

Make Excellence the One Habit That You Pursue Incessantly

Excellence is a result of several attitudes. When these attitudes are combined together they become that one habit of excellence that shall springboard you to greatness.

The impact of excellence cannot be truly measured because it will outlive your life, create urges in ordinary lives to soar high, and set standards against which all future achievements will be compared to.

You might not master all the seven in one go; but you can make an honest attempt with one or two at a time until all of them become an intrinsic part of your life. So here are the seven:

#1. If you aim for excellence you should have an eye for detail.

Little things should not be ignored. When a space shuttle is launched think about all the minute pre-flight checks that are done and how things are put on hold at the minutest variation. History has proven the disastrous consequences of neglect of the same.

Therefore make it a habit to look, see and observe keenly what others fail to note.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

#2. If you aim for excellence you need to keep polishing your craft daily.

Here, the only competition is against yourself. The only question that is asked is, “Am I doing justice to the potential God has gifted me with?” Again, the only audience you have will be you alone. So make sure you do something each day that will fine tune whatever ability, skill, or talent you have.

Therefore make it a habit to prioritize quality time each day for that one thing you are good at.

#3. If you aim for excellence a spirit of dissatisfaction should dominate you.

You should always be dissatisfied with your best. You need to learn to think about your best victories and performances as failures. The world will say great things about your victories. But as for you turn your back to the crowd like a music conductor does and look intensely to make your perfect, better.

Therefore make it a habit to forget your past successes and press on to do something new beyond belief.

#4. If you aim for excellence you need to race against time.

There is always a sense of calm urgency taking hold of a man dominated by a higher purpose in life. Such a man like a soldier in war has no time for the frivolities of life. He is sharply focused on making the best utilisation of time. That requires cutting off all distractions–bad, good, better–everything that does not contribute to helping you achieve your goal.

Therefore make it a habit to be a cut-throat in tearing down all time-wasting activities in life.

#5. If you aim for excellence you are always prepared.

In other words the habit of saying excuses is not in your genes. If you get stuck somewhere you will think of how to find the best way out instead of feeling helpless and entertaining self-pity while you lick your wounds. Another important aspect of being prepared is to have processes in place to manage all that you do. Double-check even when you are certain you are fully prepared. Follow-up if others are involved. Make absolutely sure that all in human power has been done and taken care of.

Therefore make it a habit to do all in your power, wisdom, intuition, and foresight to be prepared.

#6. If you aim for excellence you will do your best each time you do something.

You will not rationalize and think, “Oh, this is only the trials. I can relax. But tomorrow for the real performance I will do my best.” Never will someone with excellence in his blood think like that. For him every single opportunity, big or small, is a chance to give his very best. Only such an attitude will take you places. Only such an attitude will help you do things in all earnestness even when no one is watching. Even when others counsel you, “Oh, this much is enough,” you will not listen. As the American legendary basketball Coach of UCLA fame John Wooden said, “Make each day your masterpiece.” I might add, “Finish each task you do as if you have no second chance.”

Therefore make it a habit to make each rehearsal, each activity, each routine thing you do stamped with “nothing short of the best.”

#7. If you aim for excellence develop an impeccable character.

Above and beyond discipline, hard work, doing something more than you are asked to do–the greatest work you do is working hard on developing character. It is important that you perform but far more important is who you are. It is far more important to finish well in life than to taste success and then lose it all in one thoughtless action. Again, Success is never sweet when those close to you experience you as bitter. So put a greater premium on being true to yourself, someone true to your word, someone who does not need to be ashamed if powerful spotlights are switched on even while you sleep in the dark.

Therefore make it a habit to have integrity in your life that will stand up to any close scrutiny.

To conclude, as you consciously practice these attitudes not as techniques; but as a true, sincere, and earnest approach to life; it will ingrain in your life as habits inseparable from who you really are.

“Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.”

A Thank You Note to a Talented Batch of Youngsters

It was a short and amazing journey I had with you. Many good moments remain. The sheer amount of talent in this batch amazes me.

Perhaps talent is unused potential. You need to discipline yourself to sharpen your skills.

The best way to do so is to start working on them immediately. And then combine it with a burning desire to excel in your chosen field.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

If you learn a few tricks right, you can pull a rabbit out of a hat and people call it magic. But to weave that kind of magic in life, you need to persevere in spite of all failures and setbacks.

The good news is that each person in this batch can excel. Do not compare yourself with others and feel inferior. What’s the point in fuelling negativity? The sun still shines even if the clouds hide it.

My wish and prayer is to see each one of you succeed. And to know that in some small way the sessions we had helped you to succeed will be my greatest joy.

Thank you dear friends for your wonderful attitude, and joyous enthusiasm displayed in class.

It is not always I get the privilege of teaching such a talented and promising bunch of youngsters in one batch.

The more I think the more I miss your class. Hope this record of 71 students in Batch 210 of BPPS1 remains unbroken!

Look ahead. The future comes at dizzying speeds. If you can cut short your time spent on silly things and utilize them to prepare for your future; just like the ant gathers its food in summer for rainy days ahead; you will succeed.

You Too Can Compere–7 Tips to Compere Excellence!

You can compere to your heart’s content and your audience’s delight as you follow these 7 steps:

#1. Believe You Can!
Think of the opportunity to compere as joy. Never believe the lie that you can’t do it. Of course, there will always be people who might be able to do better than you; but you still can leave a mark. The confidence that you can definitely do it is going to make a huge impact in your performance on stage as far as compering is concerned. So believe the best about yourself and step confidently on stage.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

#2. Write a Compere-Script
As no one will attempt to construct a building without having a plan or blue print with them; no one should attempt to do compering without preparing a script. Whether you read from the script or not is a question of lesser importance. Write down everything. The actual introduction, the lines inviting the speakers, the thank you notes in between, and so on you plan to use during compering. Leave nothing to chance. Also remember to leave blank spaces in between as well as in the margins to jot down last minute changes in the programme. A person who attempts to do compering without a script is yet again like a soldier going to war without weapons!

#3. Be Enthusiastic
The joy of fielding was once made known to the world by a former cricket player from South Africa, Jonty Rhodes. He made what was a routine part of the game into a highly developed art. Similarly, you can raise the level of compering to great heights by your great enthusiasm as Jonty Rhodes did with fielding. The way you walk on stage, your gestures, your voice; and in short everything you do should pulsate with enthusiasm. Then the crowd will surely catch the fire of your enthusiasm when you compere.

#4. Maintain Good Eye Contact
The eyes can communicate a whole range of emotions and can reflect the inner state of a person quite sharply too. So use your eyes to communicate an exuberant mood while compering. Let your eyes scan the entire audience. Do not get stuck up looking at the imagined balcony or looking at blank walls. Instead make everybody feel included with your eyes with a wide sweep across the audience.

#5. Vary Your Voice
Some people tell. Others shout. Some others are full of big-sounding words. Some others whisper on stage. The point is not whether one method is correct or not; the point is that there should be a rich variety in your voice. When inviting the chief guest to inaugurate the Seminar your voice should communicate that seriousness; while announcing a popular rocking song or dance in a Reality Show your voice should communicate excitement and the upbeat mood to create anticipation. Whatever be the situation, clarity of words is a must.

#6. Make Them Feel Good
A compere’s role is not to highlight how intelligent, knowledgeable or a wizard of words he or she is. Anyone who sets out to do so is inviting the wrath of the audience. The compere is someone who draws least attention to himself or herself . Instead his or her role is to turn the spotlight on someone else all the time. Your words, gestures, and other actions on stage should all help in magnifying the person or group you are talking about. It is then that the audience learns to better appreciate those people or the action that is happening on stage.

#7. Smile All the Way
It is not your fabulous dress or make-up or ornaments that is going to win the day for you. Neither are the words that you use going to help much; though words are needed. The greatest asset for a compere is his or her smile. These days people are fed up with cosmetic smiles that are artificial. Be genuine with the crowds. Then the smile from your heart will light up all the world with hope while you compere!
