Sunday Sermonettes: The Power of God’s Living Word Is Like Fire and a Hammer That Breaks a Rock in Pieces

Fire, Hammer, and Sword Is God’s Word

Have you ever wondered why people fear or avoid to read the Bible, God’s Living Word? For it simply is not just a book. It is living and active. It penetrates to the depths of your heart and judges the innermost thoughts, secret motives, and hidden attitudes of your heart. And then it is like fire and a hammer that breaks rocks into pieces.

As a double-edged sword of the Spirt of God, the Scriptures cuts through all your defences, strips your soul naked and bare before God, and shows how ugly your sins are in their true light.

The Penetrating Light of God’s Word

There is no escape, no hiding place from its penetrating light. It not only shows you your heart’s pitiful moral condition, but also demands change. It throws light on your path ahead. It becomes a lamp to your feet. It compells you to turn away from evil and walk in what is good.

The Bible speaks the truth. It shows how evil our hearts are. But we are self-righteous. You and I say that “I am good enough.”

But the Bible tells us that our goodness are like unclean, polluted, stained filthy rags which will never match up to God’s holy standards. He says, “I am the truth.”

A true encounter of God through reading of the Bible will makes us cry out in despair saying, “Woe to me, I am unclean.” But God’s mercy is everlasting.

His Word, a true double-edged sword that penetrates your inner heart and mind; and reveals to you your hidden motives and rebellion against God; also brings you God’s comfort, healing, and hope.

There Is Life in God’s Word

There is life in this Word. As you allow God’s Word like fire to burn away all that is wrong within you; it will break your stony heart to pieces like a hammer.

God’s Word doesn’t change. Even though it was written by human authors numbering around 40 over a span of 1600 years; the true author is the Spirit of God himself who inspired them to pen the words.

God’s Word Presents the Lamb of God

On the one side the Bible talks about God’s judgement on man’s sin. It also tells us about that central moment of human history when God’s wrath on man’s disobedience, rebellion, and sin fell on Jesus, the Lamb of God, as he bled to die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

Therefore the Bible says, those who believe and put their faith in the blood of Jesus and its finished work on the cross will find pardon for their sins, receive God’s mercy, and will find eternal life.

Power to Face Temptation Through God’s Word

Again, the power of God’s Word to guard your mind and heart against temptation is huge. Therefore let us hide God’s Word in our hearts. As the Psalmist said: ““I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Encouragement Through God’s Word

Then when you are in need of it, Its words will leap from the pages and speak to you. The Holy Spirit also will remind you of the words when you need it. It will give you words of hope and endurance, comfort, strength, and encouragement.

Yes, God says in his Word:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

“I am concerned for you and will look on you with favour.”

“I will have compassion on you.”

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Believe these promises of God. Trust them. For they are true.

God’s Unchanging Word Is More Than Riches

And let us treasure his Word above all gold and riches and more than our daily food. Then it will become sweeter than honey in our mouth.

In this world of constant change; the grass withers and the flowers fall but the Word of God stands forever. And when you put your trust in God’s Word you too will live with God forever. Amen.
