Near the end of the movie Ben-Hur, two women—a mother and her daughter—hide in a cave, isolated by leprosy.
Thunder fills the sky. Rain begins to fall. Nearby, Jesus is being crucified on a hill. As his blood flows down from the cross, mingled with the rain, the two women look at each other in amazement. Their skin is restored. Their leprosy is completely gone.
What a powerful picture of what Christ’s blood does for us. While the movie shows a physical healing, it points to a far greater spiritual reality—the cleansing and healing of the soul.
The blood of Jesus speaks of his life willingly given on the cross. Because he loved us, He gave himself for us—cleansing us from our sins and bringing us back to God.
The blood of Jesus is powerful because it is innocent blood. It is sinless blood, the blood of willing obedience, the blood of sacrifice, and the blood of God himself who became human in Jesus.
His blood cleanses us from our sins—ugly and defiling as they may be—and makes our hearts clean before God. When you come to him with godly sorrow, your guilt is removed. The Bible promises your sins are completely forgiven.
God will never hold those forgiven sins against you—for those who are in Christ Jesus. He will not use them to condemn you or shame you. Jesus already bore the punishment for your sins. There is absolutely nothing more you can add to his perfect, once-for-all sacrifice.
The blood of Jesus also cleanses your conscience. You may remember what you’ve done, but you no longer have to live under the crushing weight of guilt and shame.
The Bible gives us a beautiful picture of this cleansing. It speaks of people who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. What a mystery —blood that normally stains instead makes us pure. His death brings us life. His sacrifice makes us clean.
And not only are we cleansed—we are also welcomed. Through his sacrifice, the curtain that kept us out of God’s presence was torn wide open. You now have direct, intimate access to God through Jesus. You don’t have to be afraid. You don’t have to rely on your own goodness. You can draw near and share your heart with him, crying out, “Abba, Father.”
When Satan accuses you or reminds you of your past, stand firm. Your victory over those lies is not based on your good deeds. Instead, it is built on what Jesus already finished on the cross—restoring your peace with God through his blood.
You can approach God today without fear, and you can face eternity with confidence because you belong to Jesus.
Remind yourself of the precious blood of Jesus time and again each day. When you pray, tell him you come not because of any goodness in you, but only because of the blood of his Son, Jesus. In that way, you honour the blood of Jesus. You can come before God with confidence, knowing he hears you because of Christ. This is what confidence in the blood of Jesus looks like.
Thank Jesus today for his precious blood and his sacrifice on Calvary’s hill. Thank him that he loved you and willingly gave himself to bring you close.
Come with confidence. Come boldly. Come just as you are.
