Thoughts wander—like wild horses galloping or monkeys jumping freely from tree to tree. Even when you pray, many thoughts compete for your attention. Honestly, praying with undivided attention is one of the greatest challenges we face. It is here that the call to fix your thoughts on Jesus (Hebrews 3:1) challenges us.

First, fix your thoughts on his unfailing love for you. It is love that bled on the cross for you. It is love from which nothing in all creation can separate you. It is love poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit. It is love without measure and love that never fails.

Secondly, fixing your thoughts on Jesus means learning to rely on him and lean heavily on him. People—even your best friends—can disappoint you and leave you stranded at your point of need. But Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you.

Even when everyone else deserts you and gives up on you, he remains faithful. That is what it means when the Bible says, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.” He is a Friend like no other.

Finally, say a deliberate “no” to everything that does not please him. See, your God is a lover—a jealous lover. So, learn to fall in love with Him. Then loving and obeying him will no longer feel like a duty, but a joy.

As you keep your focus on Jesus, you will learn his humility and his complete obedience to his Father’s will.

See, fixing your thoughts on Jesus is not a one-time act. It is a daily choice you make. Again and again, turn your eyes away from worthless pursuits and the passing pleasures of this life, and fix them on Jesus.

The more you fix your thoughts on Jesus, the more you will become like him.
