God planned to destroy an evil and wicked city Nineveh in the ancient world. Yet God was concerned for each one of them. He was filled with compassion and sent a prophet Jonah to warn them of coming disaster. The only way of escape was to change their wicked ways and humble themselves before God.
City life is full of change. Be it food, fashions, consumerist culture, entertainment, night life in a good and bad sense, money, power, fame, fortune, speed and busyness, movie nights and so on. The problem is nothing of these leave any room in your heart for God.
But God is concerned. How much? Prophet Jonah did not want to see those people change and find mercy with God. So he found a ship to go in the opposite direction. However he soon faced a storm, was thrown overboard, swallowed by a huge fish for 3 days and nights before God commanded the fish to vomit him on to dry land.
Inside the fish Jonah had learned that God’s plans will stand. He repented. The messenger’s heart needed correction before he could proclaim God’s message. Yes, if I don’t allow God to speak to me and correct myself first; there is no meaning in proclaiming God’s message to others.
So when Jonah was back on land God’s Word came to him a second time. Yes God gives you multiple second chances to fulfil your role and calling in life.
Then Jonah preached and the entire city humbled themselves before God and disaster was spared.
As you probably live in a city, let this thought grip you. God is watching over you. He is concerned about you. He wants you to change any wrong ways you indulge in, and live. He wants to show you compassion. He is ultimately the God of the second chance. You therefore have hope to begin again. May God gift you a fresh new shining brand new beginning in life.
