Sunday Sermonettes #055
Sometimes, people read Psalm 23 beginning The LORD is my shepherd as a perfect picture of life poem. It is not. The poem brings to life the fact that life is messy at times. No one knows when changes come. And then we are perplexed. Yet this Psalm celebrates the Shepherd who is with you and me. That makes all the difference.
A Meditation on Psalm 23 in a Child-Like Rendering | Modern Simple English
Almost known to all, the words “The LORD is my shepherd” bring comfort and strength to troubled hearts in life’s messy journey.
It assures you that you belong to Someone who cares. It reminds you that you are not forgotten and never away from his ever-watchful eye.
He is a shepherd to many. Yet he is yours and you are his in a very special way. You are intimately known to him by name.
He will make you lie down in green pastures and beside streams of water where you can find rest and refreshment, renewal, and restoration of strength.
He cares enough to nourish you and give you needed rest. You may err many times; but then he directs you with his staff.
Not to wound you but that you might not lose your way and perish! In his rod of discipline you can find comfort and protection as well.
He shouts when you are moving to danger but whispers in a still small voice when you are discouraged if you can learn to listen to his voice in the mix of all other noises that fight for your attention.
You never need to worry about what you need. He supplies it all when you focus on him. He knows what is best for you and he provides.
What is not good for you; he denies. He makes sure that there is no lack. Even when your heart may tremble in fear; he assures you that he is your protection.
There are no secrets in your life not known to him. There is absolutely nothing in your life that does not matter to him. All that concerns you is his concern too.
It’s a long journey ahead but he has gone before you. And you’ll find everything prepared for you. Even when those who oppose you are watching he satisfies you with what is good with a surplus added.
Oh, how you’ll love his special attention given to you even when life is busy and no one else finds time to even ask how you are doing!
The skies become cloudy at times. And the walk might take you through valleys that are dark and frightening. Dangers lurk there at every step. But you have this one assurance, he is with you.
Even when you have no visible sign of his presence ahead; even when you think your prayers are not heard; he is there for you.
One thing you can be assured of. And that will keep you going. Goodness and mercy will come to you; and you have a place in your Shepherd’s heart and home forever!
This Shepherd who bled and died for you is tender and merciful, compassionate and forgiving, full of love and patience. Will you come to him?
It doesn’t matter if you have walked away from him. If you come back he is ever so happy to call you his son or daughter and welcome you home.
