Sunday Sermonettes #083

When Love Begins to Grow Cold
In a world filled with news of war and constant unrest, it is easy to feel our hearts becoming cold and indifferent. Jesus warned that love would grow cold in the last days.
This is what Jesus said: “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved (Gospel of Matthew 24:12–13).
Why Our Hearts Are Growing Cold
As we look around us, we find sin or wrongdoing becoming more common. Many evil things are made to look normal. Therefore love towards God and compassionate love towards others are on the decrease.
In other words we are becoming more and more selfish. We keep thinking of how to succeed rather than how to help others. Money and entertainment have become our gods. The mobile screen has made us digital prisoners.
Rebellion against God is common. We want to run our own lives. We don’t want to seek God for his plan for our lives or his guidance for daily living. God’s holy standards are treated as trivial and trash.
What We Are Called to Do
But we are called to stay alert in this difficult world. We are called to keep our love for God aflame. We need to diligently and faithfully use the gifts and talents we have to help others to succeed in life.
Hope in the Midst of Darkness
The end is coming as Jesus predicted. The message of God’s love, the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus, is still the good news that this dying world needs to hear. There is hope in the midst of darkness.
A Call to Stay Awake
Therefore be alert and watchful. Stay awake rather than sleep in the embrace of sinful passions in life. St. Paul echoed this when he said: “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light (Romans 13:12).”
Preparing for the Coming of Jesus
Jesus is coming soon. We need to prepare for his coming just like a bride makes herself ready for the bridegroom.
The soon coming of Jesus calls for a joyous preparation, a hopeful expectation, and a deliberate turning from all sin and wrong attitudes that the Spirit of God is lighting up in the hidden corners of your heart so that you can turn away from it.
How to Rekindle a Cold Heart
What is one thing God has against you? It is that you have left your first love for Jesus. You have lost the depth of love that you first had for him (Revelation 2:4–5).
Therefore return to you first love. Tell Jesus that you love him. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel the love. Tell him that you love him with all your heart. And soon your love will be seen in obedience.
It will turn your love that has grown cold into a love that is aflame. It simply takes a broken, stuttering, hesitant, “I love you Jesus,” to be back in love with him.
