Life is short. It is a story having a beginning and end. The middle is where all the action is. Finally it is curtains down, and not many are there who will remember you after you are gone. So what’s the meaning of all this?
Let us begin at the beginning once again. None of us get the chance to determine the place of our birth nor who our parents should be. We do not even get to choose our own name!
So whatever we have has been gifted to us. Beauty, wisdom, strength, and sometimes riches as well. So what do we take pride in? And why do we look down on others who were not favoured as much as we are?
Yet people choose to live within bubbles. Glamorous but flimsy. Yes, fame, fortune, power–these three drive people crazy. Well, add one more to the list–pleasure. It can take the form of entertainment, sports, sensual pursuits, addictions, obsessions, instant messaging, and so on. What at the end of it all? Emptiness!
So what is life all about? Is there a purpose to it? If so, what is it? And how can one find it out? Is there meaning to life? Does it all end here? Does Science with all its artificial intelligence answer these fundamental questions of life?
Who am I?
Where do I come from?
Where am I going to?
Why am I here?
Simple questions; aren’t they? But do you have the answers?
Life, some say, is beautiful. But Shakespeare made Macbeth say about Life’s “brief candle” in these words:
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
But wait a minute. If life is without meaning and purpose, then what is man toiling for? Does he enjoy peace in his heart? Well, that cannot be bought for money. Peace, is God’s gift. It is the absence of peace in the heart of man that causes wars.
Life is lived on the fast lanes today; isn’t it? Look around you. Don’t you find everyone in a hurry, and busy all the time? Men and women are distracted like no other time in history. But peace is absent in their hearts.
Blessed are you if you have found peace. If not, ask God to gift you with his peace. The Prince of Peace Jesus said, “My peace I give unto you.”* It is a peace that is beyond the understanding of human mind.* The risen Jesus can just walk into any closed room where you are hiding in fear and speak peace into your life of distress. It is a gift. It comes from above. Blessed are you if you receive that gift today.
Life, as I said, is a very short story. Yours is still being scripted. No one knows when the last line is going to be written. But one thing I do know. There is no second chance. Life without finding God is a sad tale; an eternal misery; an unending despair without hope.
The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”* Ah, that means for those who trust in him, life’s story will end with those lines we all once upon a time loved to read. “And they lived happily ever after.” God and you!
